Reposting old pieces from my pixel-site. This one was made in 2009 as the example doll in my "Totally Talented You" contest. The objective was to create the very best doll you were capable of; there was no unifying theme except that I asked participants to spend at least a week working on their entries (I spent more than two on mine- I thought I was never going to finish it!). The entries were really awesome and I think it was a good contest to wrap up my last months running Sabraelle's Garden- a happy memory.
As for this doll, it is (at the time of posting it here) the best pixeled piece I've completed; I love everything about it (but especially the fish). The downside is that I haven't been able to finish a piece since; nothing I draw seems to be on par with this one and it's beyond frustrating... Ironic, no?

personally I've been wanting to create a pixel work for some while do you have any suggestions?!
and this is really really good, i just think that it works because of it's simplicity and the vibrant and clear colors

As for pixeling advice, I think the MOST important aspect is to choose a subject you really LOVE. Pushing pixels can become monotonous really fast so it's a good idea to draw something that keeps you entertained while working on it. For instance, I love looking at isometric pixel art but trying to draw one would bore me to tears; instead, I tend to focus on people and fantasy themes.
I would recommend seeking out the pixel work that appeals to you most and taking a cue from the prevailing theme when choosing your first subject. As for technical suggestions, I'm not very good at explaining how to do things but there are some fantastic tutorials on DA that cover hair, skin, shading, clothing, etc.

This reply is so late but I wanted to thank you for leaving such a sweet message! It was actually my first DD and I'm so excited but a little overwhelmed, too- I'm not sure about the proper etiquette for answering DD messages (i.e. should all faves be thanked or just comments, etc.) so I'm a little behind in my responses.
It means so much to me that you recognized my work- I cannot thank you enough for that feedback because I often wonder if my 'style' is definitive in any way. Thank you!

I've been fine! Excellent, in fact. I'm currently in Poland, on a tour with a group of teachers and assistants after a 3 week English teaching camp. And unfortunately, my artistic life has been a bit dead. :c

It's actually something in the middle. I was helping out at an English immersion camp as a teacher assistant, but going to Poland is always fun for me, so it was both. Yes, it was wonderful. (: I'm back in the states, but looking forward to going back soon.

Drawing faces is actually one of the hardest parts of pixeling for me so I always try to challenge myself by creating new ones instead of using pre-made faces. I'm glad the effort showed- thank you!

I can imagine, pixeling seems like an extremely complicated and delicate craft XD And your effort certainly does show! I mean, I absolutely love the rest of it as well and I think it's very beautiful, but the face in particular spoke to me first- Lovely work!
