cool, after this preview I'd like to make IR photo too ( I also have Nikon D50))

DimensionSeven In reply to Oblak0 [2008-08-25 14:37:29 +0000 UTC]

You'll need an infrared filter (Hoya R72, Cokin 007 or something similar) and a tripod. With a regular (factory made) D50 you can expect shutter speeds around a second. What lens are going to use for IR?

Oblak0 In reply to DimensionSeven [2008-08-25 20:21:49 +0000 UTC]

Ou thanks for information
I have Sigma 18-200mm
also I can take Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8

DimensionSeven In reply to Oblak0 [2008-08-26 15:12:14 +0000 UTC]

I'm afraid you'll get hotspots with these lenses (esp. with the Sigma 18-200). You'll find more information about lens performance in infrared here [link] or here [link]

Oblak0 In reply to DimensionSeven [2008-08-26 21:05:47 +0000 UTC]

I have to choice: my friends allready have
Sigma 50-150mm, f 2.8
Nikkor 50mm, f 1.4
Nikkor 18-135

can you give me link to your lense 18-70 because i really don't understand what it is ))

DimensionSeven In reply to Oblak0 [2008-08-27 10:48:56 +0000 UTC]

[link] click 18-70. The 18-135 is nor reviewed here. 16-85VR or 18-55 mk I-II seem to be the best DX lens choices for infrared. With the 50 f1.4 you'll be fine too (unless you use it fully stopped down).

Oblak0 In reply to DimensionSeven [2008-08-27 15:48:47 +0000 UTC]

may be, I buy something like
Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S
or Nikkor 12-24mm f/2.8
it's expencive but I think it will be good not only for IR )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DimensionSeven In reply to Oblak0 [2008-08-27 15:59:22 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the 17-35 f2.8 is probably the best lens for IR if you can afford it.
A 12-24 f2.8 nikkor doesn't exist: the 12-24 DX Nikkor is f/4 and is bad for infrared, the 14-24 f2.8 is a 1kg full frame monster, and it doesn't take filters, so using it for IR is difficult.

Oblak0 In reply to DimensionSeven [2008-08-27 23:06:09 +0000 UTC]

oh sorry I meen 14-24 f2.8 It's cool lens I make some shots whth it,
but this is not for IR (
Thanks you give me a lot of information to think about
but now i collect money I want make 10 days trip to Tokyo,
it will be cool to buy before some good lens,
because I don't really like my Sigma 18-200mm

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DimensionSeven In reply to Oblak0 [2008-08-28 08:40:28 +0000 UTC]

The Sigma 18-200 is not a good lens, agreed. Replace it with a Nikkor 16-85VR. That's said to be great for IR. And why don't you buy it IN Tokio, not before it? I would do that, the lens prices in Japan are lower than in Europe.

Oblak0 In reply to DimensionSeven [2008-08-29 06:29:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I think it`s good idea, thanks.
I don't think about this before,
because I don't really know about prices in Japan

where can i do a infrared conversion for my cam?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DimensionSeven In reply to MatthiasHaltenhof [2008-08-25 14:40:52 +0000 UTC]

Mine was converted at [link] using the standard 715nm filter and autofocus was tuned for the 18-70 nikkor. They did a great job.
