Description
Cheerilee gets a special message.Kudos if you get the math bit, though haven't done any predicate logic in about two years so help me out if I've gotten something wrong.
Wasn't planning on doing a comic today.
Happy Valentine's Day, to those of you to which the greeting still applies! (And everyone else too because why leave anyone out.)

As a graduate of mathematics, that chalk board was half the fun of this comic. I miss doing that stuff.

That is correct.
I'm a mathematician too, and I managed to infer that D_p denotes the set of all ponies, without looking at the blackboard.

I feel like the math bit is most of the comic. If someone doesn't get it, they're really missing out.
You did the math right.

Great comic, I love it BTW: You didn't state that x should not be y, so if the relation "loves" is reflexive the statement is trivial. The statement is also true if everypony who isn't loved by somepony else loves itself

Put more simply, Love is a [left total](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relation⦠[relation](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relation⦠. It would be nice if L(x,y) were [one-to-one](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bijectio⦠, but it's not defined to be. This allows for a few interesting situations to occur:
Corollary 1: Polyamory Β
L(x,y) is not necessarily a [function](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Functionβ¦ \(mathematics\)). Β
It's possible for a pony to love more than one pony.
Corollary 2: The unloved Β
L(x,y) is not necessarily [surjective](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surjectiβ¦ . Β
It's possible for somepony to be unloved - E.g. "Everypony loves only Rainbow Dash" means that most ponies go unloved.
Corollary 3: Unrequited love Β
L(x,y) is not necessarily [symmetric](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symmetriβ¦ . Β
Loving somepony doesn't mean that they love you back.

whitespaceonly In reply to nerd65536 [2014-02-15 23:59:54 +0000 UTC]
The equation on the envelope, however, states the converse. L(x, y) is still not one-to-one, so corollaries 1 and 3 still hold, but now L(x, y) is surjective. In other words, the romantic message on the envelope augments the assertion on the board that "everypony loves somepony" with "nopony is unloved", and in particular, "you are loved".
Which is adorable.
