Description EDIT: A big THANKS to everyone who's been kind enough to comment. After taking under consideration all the suggestions, this is how the picture is currently looking. The shadows were adjusted and some elements are brighter than before (including the eyes). I've also taken away the almond branch, since it's most definately making an appearance in a following picture. So, until further tampering this is how it will be appearing in the book.

Normally, I would be using good ol' ecolines for this project, but I've decided to go digital instead. This is the first time I'm officially working straight from pencil to photoshop and it hasn't been an easy transition. Don't be shy, suggestions are still welcome despite the EDIT

Pencil and Photoshop.

You don't suppose it's the bird flu?!?

Seriously now, in the earlier version it was a brighter blue, but I've decided to try a darker version in order to make it stand out.

This piece is amazing! What's it about? The background reminds me of Knossos and Thera!

Dimkas In reply to Pericles [2006-02-24 07:41:52 +0000 UTC]

You are spot on Pericles --the background is based on a fresco that was discovered in Thera, dating back to 1650 B.C. Due to text reasons I couldn't draw it more accurately, I did try to keep all the nice elements though like the lilies and the swallow --the rocks had to be cropped

Still, The final resault is great (my humble opinion). It makes me think that the scene takes place back in time.

children's books HAVE to have stories in the illustrations for obvious reasons. This has acheived just that.

It's always tough to lean on a PC, more so when you're overweight

It's still too early to say if I did right to trust it, but man the posibilities these machines have to offer!

I dont like the fact that some objects have more details then others (like the flowers compered to the hand)
I also think that there is something wrong with the left eye, like the whole face is drawn at 3/4 and the eye is drawn like it jumped to match to the front to say hi.

This is incredible!

1. I'm not sure, but it seems to me that maybe the bird's shadow should be blurrier. If the bird is roughly the same distance from the wall as the girl, shouldn't their shadows have the same diffusion?

2. There is a shadow that falls in a straight line across the wall and the girl's head. I think this takes away from the depth of the figure against the wall.

I really had to look hard to find something wrong. This is really a beautiful piece!

Dimkas In reply to Captain-D [2006-02-24 00:41:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the input Carey!

1. In the original version the swallow is further right and closer to the wall, hence the large shadow --so that's one thing waiting to be edited

2. It's intentional to a certain degree --I wanted her to merge with the surroundings. Light-wise this is probably the most complex composition I've ever made and it's been giving me quite a headache --her shadow in particular; not only it varies in density because of her posture, but it is also affected by the light reflected on the wall. And I feel there is something wrong with the angle... I probably should test this with a real model.

Captain-D In reply to Dimkas [2006-02-24 02:31:18 +0000 UTC]

If you mean for her to merge with the surroundings, I think you've accomplished it. The shadow makes it appear as though her head is becoming part of the wall. I've never attempted anything this complex, so my hat is off to you.

TawmiePylon [2006-02-23 21:57:37 +0000 UTC]

Very nicely done. And I know you probably have a style or tone you are trying to get with this and since I don't know the story it is hard to know what effect you are trying to achieve but...she almost looks too dull. Muted. Fading into the background or wallpaper.

Maybe tryin gbrightening up her eyes just a bit. I think that is all it would take.

Or you may completly ignore my suggestion. Because this really is very very good.

Thank you for your prompt reply and your spot-on comments Tawnie!

I'm afraid I can't give any details on the story yet, but the beginning of the story finds the heroine "...locked inside the palace, crying and cursing her beauty".

I wanted to portray her a step further than that; she has accepted her fate and has shut into herself despite hints all around that things are starting to change (light breaking in, the almond blossoms, the arrival of swallow)

TawmiePylon In reply to Dimkas [2006-02-24 01:10:35 +0000 UTC]

You are very welcome. It isn't that all that hard to bring myself to crutique your work though, considering it is so much fun to look at.

No problems on the lack of detail, I understand. I was just saying that because I don't really know what it is about, my observations may be of no use to you. LOL

You did a great job portaying her all Shut in and such, I completly get what you are saying. I dunno... the yellow shadow/cast in the eye just looks off. Even just making the blue a tad more blue....bah. Never mind. You are the genius, not I.

Heh. Can't wait til your next piece. Rock on.

Dimkas In reply to TawmiePylon [2006-02-24 07:10:32 +0000 UTC]

The eyes are the mirror of the soul (hint, hint)

The blue in her eyes was a last minute call --they were almond brown originally, but blue has so much more significance colour-wise. Having said that, the white in her eyes looked a lot brighter next to the brown, but lost strength with the introduction of blue...

TawmiePylon In reply to Dimkas [2006-02-24 07:48:58 +0000 UTC]

AH. HINT! I get it.

Hmm, I could see that. The brown being a darker colour there for more contrast. The Blue is awfully pale.
