One of the things not well-known about PTSD is that any traumatic event can lead to PTSD, not just from being in the military. It's hard to imagine going through a really traumatic event and not end up with permanent mental and emotional damage; the human mind just isn't designed to endure that sort of stress and trauma. There are actually quite a few characters that have strong symptoms of PTSD as well, I think it makes them seem more believable and relatable because they aren't invincible and you feel bad for them. For example, I'm pretty sure Katniss Everdeen (from The Hunger Games series) had it; she suffered from such horrible nightmares that Peeta had to sleep with her at night and comfort her, she had at least one mental breakdown because of the games, there's even hints that she was thinking of suicide, at the end of the series she still suffers from it. Actually, I'm pretty sure all the survivors in that series had PTSD, they just showed it differently. I'm also pretty sure Tony Stark in Iron Man III was supposed to have PTSD as well, considering the mental breakdowns/panic attacks from triggers reminding him of New York, the nightmares, the insomnia etc., it was so bad that he could hardly function throughout most of the movie.

I might have PTSD as well. There were a lot of people in middle school who practically tortured me mentally and emotionally, and a few of them even went out of their way to rob me when I was in high school, which caused me to sink into a deeper depression than I already was. Those people still often appear in my dreams; as a matter of fact I had a horrible nightmare the night before I found out about the burglary. I also get very angry whenever something related to the things that were stolen from me are mentioned, and I am often very irritable. Many times I have had mental breakdowns and would sometimes punch the wall in the bathroom.

Wow, that sounds horrible. You should get some help for that; if it's not PTSD it's probably some other mental illness/disorder (people who have PTSD to suffer from depression as well so it's possible you could have both.) Did you go to a really horrible school or something? I was treated pretty badly in middle school by some of my classmates but I've never been that badly treated. I was homeschooled up until 5th grade and had limited social experience so I was often taken advantage of by my classmates and picked on because of being so naïve and strange. When I'd get upset and start crying my teachers would yell at me. I've also had people act nice to me than turn on me and start teasing me; that was the worst because I got so confused and didn't know who to trust. High school was easier because my classmates were nicer than at my Middle School.

I went to two really trashy schools in my neighborhood, in fact I was supposed to attend an arts school in middle school but the school district was fucking around with my records so I was stuck there. I received nearly every kind of manipulation and torture imaginable, I even was nearly molested in sixth grade by one of the people I was around a lot as well as them cutting my wrist and trying to start a fight with me repeatedly in seventh grade. This person BTW was on serious drugs and dropped out of my middle school, but the rest of his friends wanted to practically kill me.

That's seriously messed up. Considering what you went through it wouldn't surprise me if you had some sort of PTSD; that would be traumatic for anyone but especially for a child/teenager. My middle school was actually a charter school that even focused on morals and values but many of the kids didn't seem to learn them. My high school was a public "School of Choice" and I had a better experience there, go figure. It's hard to imagine that schools can have so much bullying and teasing; it's no wonder so many kids hate school, get sick for seemingly no reason (stress can lead to physical symptoms like stomach and headaches), have mental issues (I wonder how many kids/teens suffer from some sort of PTSD that usually gets overlooked from being bullied and there a lot of teens that suffer from depression, sometimes even being driven to suicide.)

I have a better experience at my high school too, I go to an arts school and the teachers encourage the students to both be themselves and help them the best they can with many things. Ever since I got an official diagnosis for Asperger's and the co-morbids that I have as well, especially severe depression, the workload has eased a lot and many of my teachers were able to cooperate thanks to my special ed accommodations. The only thing is that the students have to take some of them upon themselves, nonetheless it works.

I have Asperger's/High-Functioning Autism as well but it only a few years ago that my parents and I any idea I probably had it as a young adult. Although it's not super obvious it makes it hard to understand and communicate with other people, I'm slower at learning certain things, change can be upsetting for me and I act rather strangely. Along with being homeschooled until 5th grade it was probably why I was teased and picked on when I was younger and probably partly why I got upset so easily when I was younger. Plus, I have ADHD, which I found out I had in about 8th grade, making it hard to focus, remember certain things and causes me to get distracted easily though medication seems to help. I also have mild depression, though I rarely feel depressed and some anxiety issues so I have to take an anti-depression/anti-anxiety medication. I have an average intelligence and seem to do well in school once I started taking medication for the ADHD so I haven't been able to get special education even though I probably need it because I have trouble with life skills and the like. I'm glad you're doing better though you should probably get some help if PTSD-like symptoms are really bothering you.

I probably have to do more research anyway because many of the symptoms also tie in with my depression.

Well, like I said, people who have PTSD often have depression too so it's possible you have both, which would explain the overlapping symptoms. I don't think nightmares are a symptom of depression but it's common with PTSD.

No one should have to live with that. If I could I'd take the pain of it away.
Know that I'm here for you.

PTSD has been a subject I've been interested in for along time, specifically in combat veterans [as you many have gathered from some of my writing]. But most of the symptoms and coping mechanisms are the same across the spectrum, even if the specifics are vastly different. People need to realize that this is a very real disorder, and so many people suffer from it in varying degrees. If they learn to recognize and respect it, they can move forward with helping those affected to recover, instead of unwittingly fighting, or punishing them for actions they don't understand.

Indeed...and thank you for being there for me, hon; you're a great friend. <3 I was just recently diagnosed with "Complex-Post Traumatic Stress Disorder", which is a bit different from PTSD, but many of the symptoms are the same: [link] ...I also have DPD ( [link] ), which developed due to the trauma/abuse as well.

I have to say, I am honestly shocked and amazed. While I don't expect you to bare your darkest days here for the world to see, you present as a spectacularly talented, friendly, and confident woman.
I'm sure I'm only seeing half [or less than] of the story, and you are absolutely entitled to your privacy. But if you ever need an ear to 'chew', mine are available.
