basically just painting, like shading using a pencil, just gradually blending.
dinmoney.deviantart.com/art/Diโฆ is a more recent tutorial of mine, hopefully it is more helpful, cheers!

Wow... It looks simple but, I'm sure, for someone not used to it may be quite hard.
Anyway, it's always a good help on the way of improvement!
Great work!

Excellent tutorial. I have to ask, how do you get the materials to look so different and realistic by using greyscale values? I'm trying to get good at concept work in photoshop but most of my efforts at painting stuff so far have resulted in block colours, which is fine, but I really want to try improve at more fundamental things like this. Also, how many layers do you usually find using for stuff like this? Cheers

haha.
Can I make you a question? When painting digitally I usually makes layers for each part of the drawing like "body base", "body shadows", "body lights", etc... But every layer I paint directly in colors.
what do you say, is better if I use the greyscale method (drawing the entire image in greyscale), and then I put the color on it??? iยดm a little afraid it could be more difficult D:

it's personal preference and varies from pic to pic, but i prefer to start in grayscale. i find that once you get the tones right, colouring is just icing on the cake. give it a try, always good to experiment (=

Thanks I think I will surely try that method, it seems to be a more faster and presice way for painting ^^

How you got from the rough version to the polished final is what amazes me I can't wrap my head around that.

hey awesome tut, llove the step by step progress. I was just wondering is there a colour tutorial or something after this? i usually colour without black and white value map, but i know a lotta people work this way. When i sem to apply colour oerlays/multiplies over back and white, it never looks right to me, and then i end up just colouring over all of it again in normal colours ignoring the value i made with the black and white, any tips you can give me?
