Description Well I was shuffling a bunch of stuff around today and found two drawings for my most recent unwritten Godzilla fanfic, which I guess I forgot to scan. So two surprise uploads for today. XP

The story (which was the second draft of Godzilla: The Second Age) was in a post-apocolyptic setting, where giant monsters and nuclear weapons have decimated the planet. I was brainstorming for different things I could do with the setting while catching up on MonsterQuest via youtube, and one of the episodes I'd missed (and thus started watching) was about giant and possibly mutated rat populations living in NY. (Coincidentally, the same episode that later spawned the Ratraptors)
I thought it was really interesting and decided I could tweak it to work in the story. The NY rats, and I think rats in general, are very dependent on human populations- buildings nests in tunnels and basements, feeding on garbage and litter, etc. So I figured that if this big apocolyptic event would take place and crippled mankind, then the rats could really thrive. Fewer people to scare them off, more unguarded food and uninhabited homes, and probably no more professional exterminators. They could just run roughshod all over the place and really take a hold of their own sort of shadowy, scavenger-ish niche in this new "environment". The show on MonsterQuest talked about how rats were known to grow larger when the conditions are in their favor, and also mentioned urban legends (and at least one supposedly genuine instance) where rats would work cooperatively to attack larger prey- like people.
So, after several years of thriving like mad and maybe a little radioactive growth spurt to boot, these wild rats would become this: aggressive, pack-hunting vermin the size of jaguars.
Another part of the episode I was watching interviewed this really crazy-looking homeless fellow that lived in a tunnel under NYC. He claimed that he saw giant rats all the time, and that they had large burrows deeper in the tunnel where they nested. According to him they only came out at night, but were so obtrusive and fearless of humans that he had to pour ammonia around himself at night to keep them away while he slept. That sounded like it'd fit the story perfectly so I kept that aspect as well; these huge rats stay in their underground nests during the day, but at night they run all over the place, snooping into whatever they please and devouring everything they can find. I think it would've been a good way to keep the humans in direct contact with the monsters, without it being like GINO or Cloverfield, where they're constantly in combat with them- this would be more like I Am Legend plus kaiju. XP
Oh, and yes, those things embedded in it's fur are giant ticks. Maybe they even transmit some kind of virus to the rats that makes their bite infectious? Dunno. The story never got written and this was as far as I got with the idea.

What else was going to be in this old fanfic?

As far as small monsters go I think this was actually it. I remember sketching a giant cockroach too, but the rat replaced it.

Yeah... I don't mind the regular ones too much, but the really big ones... eesh.

I was under the impression that rats, like cockroaches, would be very unlikely to survive apocalypse. They rely so strongly on human food and shelter that if it was to stop, they would die out quickly.

I could be mistaken, though. That may just be Canada, where you're screwed if you don't have shelter in the winter. And far be it for me to stop you from making rat kaiju.

I think that's largely true, but the key here is that the human race hasn't been completely wiped out. There are still people and buildings around but they're ruined; think along the lines of Reign of Fire or Fallout 3. The rats would still have human food and shelter to mooch off of. I think you're definitely right, though, that if there weren't any people at all they'd probably go extinct pretty fast. So their little reign of terror would probably be fairly short lived.

Still, must be hard to feed and support yourself and the rats and the giant radioactive rats after the end of the world.

Oh yes, it'd hardly be a stable "habitat". Lots of competition, starvation and (in the case of the rats more than the humans, I'd hope) cannibalism.

Nice idea, I think you should still make it a story, but not connected with Godzilla.

Wow, that's pretty darn cool, and sorta creepy as well!

Imagine the size of the mouse trap you'd need for this guy...

lol, yeah... you might be better off trying a bear trap.
Thanks!

hahaha
great monster idea and information!
scorpions and cockroaches can also somehow survive nuclear blasts in real life too.
