Description
β¦If the Golden-Age Superman existed, he would have punched DC headquarters (The Building) and made the bosses pay Siegel and Shuster what they were owed and more.-Daniel Irizarri-Oquendo

Except that DC didn't owe them anything.

LOL, I don't need to be an official at DC, its part of the official record. They sold there creation to DC, DC then made the character popular with there production power as national comics & then they left due to creative differences: At that point DC owed them nothing. The fact that DC later set them up with an unwarranted pension plan out of the kindness of its heart already speaks volumes.
So no, DC did not owe them anything & that's part of the public record, a very open part of our hobbies knowledge set.

Creators get screwed over every year from bad contracts and it's perfectly legal but that doesn't make it a-okay and something to ignore. It still happens. Legality does not always imply virtue. Especially way back in the 30s when none of these ideas about copyrights that we have now were as set in stone. DC and Marvel (in their treatment of Kirby) both currently have a sole legal ownership characters and that has nothing to do with what's "right or wrong". My comment about a fictional character who, in his original inception, may have interpreted laws by his own ideas of right and wrong, making DC do the 'right' thing and not the 'legal' thing, is just that. A comment.
I think it's nice that you play devil's advocate but I don't particularly care nor did I ask about the legal intricacies of the actual case.

"Creators get screwed over every year from bad contracts and it's perfectly legal but that doesn't make it a-okay and something to ignore."
LOL its a moot point, since your comment was "and made the bosses pay Siegel and Shuster what they were owed and more." Well since they are owed nothing, it doesn't matter how unfair you may think it is, its still not owed, by definition.
"Legality does not always imply virtue."
an you declaring something unfair, does not make it so.
"My comment about a fictional character who, in his original inception, may have interpreted laws by his own ideas of right and wrong, making DC do the 'right' thing and not the 'legal' thing, is just that. A comment."
LOL except that my comment is referring to the artist commentary.

Clearly it's just all those other people whose comments you've had to hide from your DA profile that're wrong and not you, the person who goes into other peoples deviations to politely tell people that they're wrong over semantics when absolutely no-one gives a fuck about your opinion.Β
Yes that's totally healthy behavior.
Pointing out where someone works (whichΒ isn't creepy at all)Β as a point of ridicule, yeah that sounds like something only great people do. You're right, being a scientific illustrator is for losers.
nobody gives a fuck about your opinion, and I'm sure that must hurt deep inside, but keep that shit to yourself because, and i repeat, nobody gives a fuck about your opinion.

Love this but Batman is a direct ripoff of Superman. Back then grey and blue. Just batears, and a batsymbol. Whoa not really intuitive. Superman was in WarWorld 2 helping people against the Nazi's. The Jews in those times didn't need a dark hero that caused fear in their hearts, but a humane face that gave them hope.Β
He's adopted, has an extinct culture, and planet. Had to learn to use his ability in his teens. Weaknesses of Krytonite Radiation, and Magic. Grew up on a farm. Is an illegal immigrants. Goes against the big rich guys and greater evil. Superman is way more interesting than Batman whom just is emo crying over his dead parents every issues, picking up little boys to fight his battles for him, never has a stable relationship with a female, and keeps the villian that killed Jason Todd and his son Damoion Wayne alive. Superman killed doomsday which no hero could when he woke up from his Kryptonian coma. Batman can't even defeat a clown, clay, penuin, a catsuit, a guy that u can throw a rock at his helmet and break and he go noo. Mr freeze, mad hatter, scarecrow, 2 face. Β He just goes after insane weak villains. I'm tired of DC over amping Batman to take on the likes of Darkseid which should never happen. Β Nor is he smarter than Superman who actually grew up in the hood, and who has his parents superior intellect. WHile Bruce was spoodsfed, and money was given to him. Batman is the most flawed and boring hero to date. One day people will wake up and say man he is a terrible character, and go back to Superman. Man he's a character that is powerful and does good, controls himself, and is genuinely good. Whom is powerful and still believes in God. Thats deep. I think the U.S is just obsessed with Darkness right now, but when it gets real dark they'll return to the light.Β
And yeah I agree the creators got screwed bigtime. But all creators get screwed. Thats what sucks about being a creator, and not knowing where to go. I fear this will happen to my creation.Β

This is a sad truth to swallow. I have a guide into Superman books and instead of starting me off in GA I started with 'Whatever Happened to The Man of Tomorrow' and then to Bryne's reboot. I think DC has been trying to do big things with Supes, as far as I know with renouncing his citizenship but they pussied out of venturing further into the concept.
In any event, I did a poll to see how many people liked Batman and how many liked Superman. I don't think I have to mention at all who won but I was surprised at how attractive most Superman fans turned out being.

I know I'm late to the party, but YES YES YES!
I had an idea for what I think is a pretty innovative take on Superman.
Supes is all about metabolism. His alien physiology reacts to our yellow sun by metabolizing it's radiation into incredible energy. He's got the energy to lead a double life with little to no sleep, and he still has enough left over to display amazing abilities never before seen. As a farm boy he knows all about food production and sustainability. The food industry being what it is today - preservatives, chemicals not meant to be consumed by man in most foods, meat from mistreated and malnutritioned animals, etc, would infuriate him. He becomes an investigative reporter fighting against corporate greed and short-sightedness. Enter: Lex Luthor.
So in every sense he'd be a super man. Someone who inspires in both roles - saving lives from impossible threats as Superman, and doing his best to save his adopted species and world as Clark Kent.
I know this is a very hippie take on the character and DC would NEVER go for it but I think it makes sense and it's definitely topical. Moreso than Batman, even.

i don't think thats too far-off what Waid did with his re-imagining in Birth-right, which in the end, DC ended up retconning once more and now its like it never happened. : (

Oh, all this retconning. Why can't we just treat these guys like James Bond? They don't need to explain why he hasn't aged in 50+ years, do they?
Continuity sucks sometimes.

dio-03 In reply to AlejandroIsAMinotaur [2011-04-19 20:06:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, he ages in real time. His son has grown into a young man as the book progressed, for example.
I figure do one or the other - either have the characters grow and change with time, or just don't address it. Having a reality-altering event every few years is just bad storytelling.
