The great ash tree Yggdrasil has three roots that support it. The roots draw water from three magical wells. In this painting we see the well underneath known as Hvergelmir located in the frozen world Niffelheim. Within the churning icy waters lives the ferocious serpent named Nidhoggr.

There are many animals and characters that are found within the branches of the tree and in this painting I have included one of the stags who graze on the boughs. There is also the eagle who sits in the canopy and collects knowledge by gazing over all the nine realms.

Revolving around the tree are the sun and the moon chased by enormous wolves who seek to devour them. The sun was pulled across the sky by the charioteer Sol while the great dark wolf Hati constantly pursued. Her brother Mani pulled the moon ducking and diving and skipping along as the wolf Skol was hot on his heels.

If the wolves ever caught the children it would signal the beginning of Ragnarok, the end of times.
