Description
Marina never did anything in a kitchen before. You can clearly see it the way she mutilated the last carrot. ^^But Silver starts giving her some lessons starting with how to handle a knife and the difference between slicing, carving, and hacking.
Of course, while he's teaching her here, her heart starts pounding hard as she is listening to the kind tone in his voice. It's as though his voice was softly kissing her ear. And she begins to enjoy the feeling of his hands so gently touching hers.
This is a scene that will happen eventually in my story. It has been in my head for a long time now and I have finally finished it. I made a sketch of it a long time ago and I finally decided to redo it and I know I made it a lot better.
I used a bit of reference for Silver's arm, the lighting, and mainly the background. The background was such a pain and turned out awful, so I improvised by making it extra blurry and made some steam around the place.
I think I made Marina a bit too small for this pic, but right here, I think it all looks a little cute. I mean the gentle giant has his arms around the little lady. ^///^
LOL. I know you're gonna think that those carrot things are WAY too big. But hey, this does take place in an 'alien' universe or such. They could've grown on a very fertile planet where the vegetation grow large and tasty. ^_^
Anywho, I wanted to really submit this when the chapter of it happening came up. But I realized that it's been a while since the last submit of Silver and Marina. So, here it is, and you can think of it as a preview of what's going to go on between the couple.

Such a cute moment between the couple. . .and a terrific learning experience for Marina.
I remember that old sketch, but I like how in this picture, you have Silver's hands over both of hers guiding her more.
I really like Marina's expression--the concentration on how Silver is showing her how to correctly cut the...carrot things. I remember my first time trying to chop up some onions and bell pepper for spaghetti..
I like that you have her pieces of mutilated carrot off to the side with Silver showing her how to neatly slice it.
I think the background is fine to make it blurry like that...after all, the galley is where the steam from the cooking is going to linger.
Just one thing I think maybe is a bit confusing... One of Silver's shoulders looks as if it is humped up..higher than the other...kind of making it look like one of those muscle suits. You could maybe add like lines or wrinkles in his shirt to make it look a bit more realistic.
But other than that I think it looks fine! Keep up the great work!

I'm certainly nobody to talk about anatomy (I can say that it has improved a lot from the sketch, though!!) or backgrounds since I suck at both but I have other things to suggest if you don't mind.
I would put more wrinkles in their clothing (specially Silver's since he's occuppying most of the picture xD). There should be some in the elbow and the shoulder where his prosthetic arm is attached. You should also add another darker layer (or maybe more) of shading to the characters, that would make them more 3-dimensional. For example, in their necks below their chins and the area of Silver's belly that's closer to Marina's back (she should be blocking light from reaching his body the way it reaches his real arm, for example), same goes for Marina's dress and arms.
Also, I just noticed that the carrot slices aren't casting a shadow on the table, I get that Silver's bulk is already casting a shadow over it but they should also have their own little shadow to make them really look like they're on the table.
I hope what I said made sense
BTW, no wonder she's blushing with squishy belly pressed against her back! Sorry, I couldn't help myslef!

This is a BIG improvement over the original sketch. However a couple things stand out:
Women's torsos are not inverted triangles. The torso line from her armpit to her waist, and the line from under her breasts to her waist should be closer to straight down than slanted dramatically inward. Women aren't shaped like that. No one is.
What's with the carrots? They're enormous. They're as big as Marina's arm. The one in the foreground is almost the size of her head. What exactly is going on? And, when you cut something that long, you'd hold it closer to the knife, not on the end.

I mentioned the carrots come from a planet where the vegetation grows larger than normal. Be a perfect place to stop world hunger, eh? ^^

You said IF they look to big they COULD be, to be specific. However, out of the three points I made that was the least significant.
Her body is still an inverted triangle and you still wouldn't cut something that long by holding the far tip.

Did you notice the uncanny resemblance that Marina bares to the animated Anastasia? This is almost a direct copy, I'll try to find a clip. Even the hair is the same except for the long part in the back

I didn't notice but you could be right. Although, Marina to me always looked like Andrea condensed every Disney/Bluth girl ever to the most uninteresting mean. so I guess that stands.

It was odd, because you originally said that her weird side-bang was based on Jessica Rabbit's. But, Jessica never had bangs. And she never had a weird short patch over one ear. Her hair was all one length, parted on the side, and allowed to hang forward. There was no asymmetrical cut.

Hahah I'm sorry but how does Marina look anything like Anastasia? I'm pretty sure that you're just thinking this certain expression possibly resembles an expression made by Anastasia, but you really shouldn't accuse her for copying when clearly it wasn't intentional in any way, even if she has a history of heavily relying on animated cells.

I too find it rude. I highly doubt she even thought of Anastasia when she was redoing the pic, so people trying to find screenshots similar to the scene is just asking for drama.

Actually, I did find one that is very similar: [link]
I like Marina's new-longer face shape (even if it does make her look like Anastasia a little) - it makes her look her age. Her expression in this is a little off though. She looks really worried instead of happy/content that Silver is helping her.

DisneyFan-01 In reply to Musashden [2012-07-30 21:42:11 +0000 UTC]
Nah the angle of Marina's head is lower. Whilst Anastasia is look straight ahead, Marina's looking down.
And Marina's expression: The worried look is what I was aiming for. She's doing something she has no experience with. Handling a knife is much different than handling a sword. And, most of all, her hand is in the gentle grip of a larger hand and he is whispering into her ear. Even I would get a little shakey with that. ^^

Musashden In reply to DisneyFan-01 [2012-07-31 04:18:36 +0000 UTC]
Well yeah but what I meant was that the shape of the face (in 3/4) eyes and mouth are similar. It's what BurningxCascade was talking about. They're not identical - just similar in looks, which is fine. Anastasia is pretty and a relatively good reference as far as animated fairytale girls go.
Oh okay. I thought you were trying for a more quizzical/curious-happy look like in the old sketch.

For the 100th time.
They do not accuse you of tracing because they think you trace.
They don't care if you trace or not.
They already know you can't trace.
They're trying to get a rise out of you.
That is how you got on ED.
Understand yet?

The look remind me of myself a little when I have to handle a knife. I'm not that much of a cook, but when I have to slice some things, I get a tad nervous because I have a bit of fear of REALLY sharp objects. LOL.

comparing the sketch and the final version, i think you've done a very well job of marina's proportions.
now, there's a couple of things that are a bit off. marina should lean away from the counter, not against it unless she was reaching for something. (bent over her work) and the interior of the carrots should be a bit ringed.
other than that i think it's pretty good so far.

Oooooh, I'm gonna be the devil's advocate here! I think marina's proportions and expression are indeed a vast improvement to the sketch and exist much more in the Disney universe, so right on. I also like that you are thinking your illustrations through more, like thinking to tie back her hair, given what she's doing. I gotta say though, I like Silver a lot better in the old sketch for a couple of reasons, mainly that his silhouette is much more clear. His head breaks the line on his shoulders in the sketch and makes for a clearer read, and his hand, although unfinished, frames her hand much more clearly and doesn't obscure the cutting action. If you married sketchy Silver with polished Marina, I think you'd knock it out of the park.
That isn't to say this is a bad piece at all, I can tell a lot of care and I improvement have gone into it and it's more successful than the sketch as a whole.
