The Shackles of the Dread Knight are remnants of a once-unstoppable warlord known as Sir Valthrun the Malevolent, who sought to conquer the realms with his iron fist. Valthrun was both feared and reviled, his name synonymous with tyranny and sorrow. In his relentless pursuit of power, he struck a dark bargain with a fiend from the lower planes, trading his soul for might and dominion over the living.
As a symbol of his pact and to instill dread in the hearts of his foes, the fiend granted Valthrun these gauntlets, the Shackles of the Dread Knight. Crafted from blackened steel and chains that bound his own life essence, the gauntlets were a testament to his servitude and his power. However, Valthrun's reign would not last; he was betrayed and overthrown, his gauntlets lost to time, waiting for a new master to bind.
Properties:
Iron Grip of Tyranny: The gauntlets grant the wearer immense strength, adding a +3 bonus to Strength (Athletics) checks made to grapple foes.
Chain of the Damned: The shackles can extend chains to bind and drag enemies closer, with the chains dealing 1d6 bludgeoning damage on a successful hit.
Aura of Fear: Once per day, the wearer can unleash an aura of terror. Enemies within a 15-foot radius must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute.
Curse: Bonds of the Betrayed:
Weight of Betrayal: For each enemy slain while wearing the gauntlets, the wearer's movements become increasingly sluggish, reducing their speed by 5 feet until the end of their next long rest.
Echoes of Valthrun: The spirit of the Dread Knight lingers within the shackles. Each time the Aura of Fear is used, the wearer hears the whispers of Valthrun, sowing distrust and paranoia, causing disadvantage on Charisma checks with allies for the next hour.
