This was just a kind of random image that popped into my head while I was scripting the comic, I wanted to show a bit more of his personality; while he is grumpy almost all of the time, he isnt always quite as scary or serious. He gets weirded out by things just like we do xD

Huh, interesting! I'm certainly not a doctor either so there are many things I don't know or haven't considered while developing his character. It might not always quite make scientific sense and its again because I don't know everything or have thought of every single detail. So try not to dig into things too much, especially this whole fascination you have with his hand and the chain on it.
I'll certainly keep this research in mind though, the more I know about his condition the more accurately I can portray it, even if its only going to be subtly.

Again like I said the biology of your merpeople is very likely different from humans in many ways so therefore it might not effect him the same way it does us.

You said that Urchin has been chained for ten years, his hand cannot be freed, and he's suffering a slow and painful death of necrosis. I think you implied at one point that the merpeople who chained didn't expect him to last long.
I therefore gotta ask. What's stopping Urchin from putting himself out of his misery and taking his own life?

Thats a pretty good question! (Its now canonically 14 years) Theres not really much stopping him. He could do it if he wanted to, but it would essentially be throwing away the life he beat the odds to keep. Much like taking the plunge into the abyss, theres physically nothing stopping him, but still he can't quite bring himself to do it. Perhaps holding on to any hope that he may yet get to live a free life.
The past 14 years would have been for nothing if he did. He's too stubborn to let go yet.

On another topic I worried that my sister won't have my Contest entry drawings done on time. If that happens would you still accept a Literature deviation describing in great detail my mermaid character as an entry. I am aware that would've be fair to the other contestants who spent a lot of time and energy drawing; therefore if you can't accept that I perfectly understand.

I cant accept it, I'm afraid! It's not because I place less value in writing work or anything, but winning with such an entry would require me having to take the liberty of doing the visual design for you (regardless of how well you describe it) when I come around to giving that character a cameo in the comic. And doing that would be similar to cheating, since everyone else would have had to do the design themselves.
Even if you'd get it to me after your entry with writing alone wins, it'll still be over the deadline! It'd be giving you special treatment to allow it, as much as it pains me to disappoint. I can only hope for you that the drawing gets done in time! Good luck!

I thought as much, if my sister can't get it done on time I'll try drawing it myself, but just to warn you my drawing skills are still at an elementary school level. I just hope I can get the basic image and idea across.
