THE CHAINS DESTROYED ME
I'm not sure where this idea came from and it started out with me trying to do some pose practice. At some point I guess I decided I was going to take it all the way into a full piece and here we are. xD
I improvised the character and he's loosely based on a sea urchin. The impression I got while drawing this was that he was incredibly poisonous and he'd been chained to the bottom of the ocean to keep him away. Other than that, he hasn't done anything wrong, and as you can probably see, he's incredibly sour about it. I'd say he's been down there a while and he's become quite unfriendly, not that I blame him.
Edit: I was convinced by you lot to do more with him, and so I am as of now working on a short comic that tells his story and how he ended up like this. Thank you all so much for your support and giving me the confidence to make something.

I noticed that 12 days ago was November 2, Urchin's 3rd Anniversary. I am aware that you are in the middle of a move so I'm NOT going to ask you to do anything special.Β
But I am going to ask another question, please; I can't remember if I asked this before or if you've already provided a similar answer to a different question, so please don't be irritated.
Did Urchin/Rurek's Spines/Barbs grow or come into existence as a direct result of his mutation? I.e. was he born with those Spines/Barbs, or did they grow when his genes mutated and when his body started producing Poison?

You havenβt asked that before!
Iβd say that he was born with some kind of spines, though perhaps not quite so prominent or containing any toxin. Mers can have a wide range of different fins etc on their backs, so it wouldnβt be too outrageous to believe there was some kind of appendages there to begin with.
The mutation would have mutated them somewhat, and since heβs been this way since he was very young and not fully grown, they could have had the opportunity to grow into something a bit different than what they would look like if he was normal.

Thanks! After drawing them enough I think I like drawing mermen more than mermaids, theyre much less common to see. This piece ended up being my most popular which is really surprising, but flattering too I guess! Thanks very much

I really love the colors of this, and how the one bright spot is in his eye. It really draws the eyes to his face and makes the darkness in the rest of the piece super effective.
