The chains.
THE CHAINS DESTROYED ME

I'm not sure where this idea came from and it started out with me trying to do some pose practice. At some point I guess I decided I was going to take it all the way into a full piece and here we are. xD

I improvised the character and he's loosely based on a sea urchin. The impression I got while drawing this was that he was incredibly poisonous and he'd been chained to the bottom of the ocean to keep him away. Other than that, he hasn't done anything wrong, and as you can probably see, he's incredibly sour about it. I'd say he's been down there a while and he's become quite unfriendly, not that I blame him.

Edit: I was convinced by you lot to do more with him, and so I am as of now working on a short comic that tells his story and how he ended up like this. Thank you all so much for your support and giving me the confidence to make something.

puzzle1022 [2017-07-15 20:01:38 +0000 UTC]

Dear DizzyAlyx

I've got to ask you about the shackle/manacle. How does the shackle/manacle work? Is the "fastener" as you call it a key based locking mechanism? If so then why do I not see a keyhole or padlock in any of the pictures or any indication that the shackle/manacle has a "seam" or hinges that would imply that it opens. Nor do I seen any bolt or screws (which are common "fasteners") holding it closed. If it is key based, where is the key? Did the merpeople who chained him up take it with then and if so where do they keep it? Or did they throw the key into the Abyss?

I've also got to ask: How come he hasn't been able to remove the shackle/manacle? You said in previous comments that he's been chained like that for ten years, while I understand that today he can't remove it because of the blood clot that has formed. What I don't understand is how come he wasn't able to find a way to remove it in his early years of imprisonment/exile before it "crippled and deformed his hand"? You would think that with nothing but time on his hands the young merboy that he was would've been able to improvise a lock-pick or wrench or screwdriver to remove whatever "fastener" was keeping him trapped.

In this comic I found the imprisoned merman was able to create a lock-pick from the bones of his fish dinner:

If I was writing the "Gone and Forgotten" story I probably would've had a merperson sorcerer use magic to enlarge the shackle/manacle enough to fit his hand through and then (using the same magic) cause the shackle/manacle to shrink and thereby trapping his hand.

Please respond, THANK YOU.

PS: Sorry 4 the questions.

I'm sorry to disappoint, but the answer to that question doesn't have any value to the story. You're digging a bit too deep into something really shallow and insignificant. Like I've said before, the specifics of how exactly something locks around his arm isn't going to add anything interesting or important to the story, and would only be unnecessary details that would drag it out for no particular reason.

When writing and planning a story out it's important to recognize things that are just unimportant details. Figuring out something that would work and explaining it wouldn't add any kind of depth or important information that I'd need later on. Especially since I don't plan on opening said lock. If I was, maybe it'd be something worth thinking about.

Simply put, if I don't plan on opening it, I don't need to explain how it opens

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

All right, I guess I am reading too much into this.

Sorry

So your story is more going to focus on how he got there rather than how he can escape. Sounds to me like your planning on him being chained for life. More comment than question.

Thanks 4 always being quick on answering my questions

No problem! Youre correct in assuming the story will be focused on what happened before this moment than what happens next. His future isn't 100% set in stone, though I do have many paths he could take in my head. Literally the only thing I've got my mind set on is that that lock does not open. Not to say he doesn't get out one day, which he may or may not. It's just that the lock itself is very insignificant in my head, it is what it is and it does not change. I don't need to go into it too much with that in mind :}

I do always appreciate the questions and interest though ^^

Seeing how you don't have a clear conception of how the lock works then does that means you not going to actually show the moment they put it on him in whatever flashback you have planned?

It's going to be in his memory, kind of a "it happened so fast" kind of thing. people with no faces because he doesnt remember them. It'll be him remembering that it was put on him, not how, since that'd be what he remembers more

Ah I know of that guy, I see his work in groups I follow a lot :} As far as I'm concerned you can do whatever fanart/fiction you like, I don't have any problems with that, I just hope my characters are interesting enough to work with, I haven't told too much about them yet.

If you decode all the mermish please don't shout it out! In the two years I've created him, I've never straight out told people his name. It's a very large part of his story that he's been left and forgotten by everyone he once knew. Having his name be kind of difficult to get a hold of is the point, being in plain sight if you bother to actually look for it, but a total mystery if you don't. His name is there, but only if you care to look for it, just like anyone from his past could get it if they cared to remember.

Only two people have figured out what it is up to now, and theyll probably get a shoutout from me when the time comes ^^

With the Sea Urchin thing, I don't usually like making mers a " merman" all of them have their designs inspired by something, such as Butters , whose design is inspired by a water buttercup. Their two designs are the most heavily influenced by whatever I chose but it's only by appearance. They're not "part" anything (even though the urchin IS poisonous, but its not because he's part sea urchin, but actually because he's a mutated merman) a purple spiny appearance like a sea urchin goes really well to give the impression that he's dangerous. But he's not a "Sea Urchin Merman", just as butters is not a "Buttercup Merman" but rather from the appearance that looks very flowery and gentle, it's a good visual aid about him and how he acts.

Hmmmmm I haven't really got a set age for him, he was definitely a child when he was chained, and has grown up since. It'd have been at least 10 years if not more. Since I think him to be around the 10-12 year old age from how I drew him in the last piece of him I did. Around the same age as Teddy and Rolph currently are in the comic.

Don't worry I know you want to keep his real name a secret. Which is why I didn't include the letters I decoded in the message.

Thanks for the chat, But I'm going to have to end it now. Also I'm going to hide my last comment for reasons I can't at the moment discuss. Talk 2 U later.

Im not getting mad xD and I read that comic, so I'm well aware of their similarities and differences. The similarities are literally only surface deep so I don't really like it when people compare the stories or settings when all they did was take one look at this picture and see that theyre both merpeople lol. Its much deeper than that :}
