Yeah they can be alittle intimidating, but one you kinda figure them out, you can build a suit for anyone from the ground up!

You know there is so much out there about women's fashion. I mean it's EVERYWHERE! But when I'm looking or anything about men's fashion ('cept those hidious baggy, torn jeans) it's very scarce. So this is an awesome thing to find. It's useful to both the artist and to men in general. It's easy to understand and from your illustrations clearly works. Thank you!

Yeah, and the thing about mens fashion is, they basically just have the suit. It's their presentaion, their presence, Basically their picture frame. And if the frame doesn't do everything to make the face look good then you won't look or feel your best!
Men typically don't get to have crazy hair, or makeup, or purses or jewelry, so hey have to have THAT PERFECT SUIT, to do all the talking for them, and one that also draws you to the face rather than the suit itself. It's amazing how much a suit can tell you about a person! Way more than I think a dress can!

Fashion -- particularly men's fashion -- has always been far beyond my grasp. Which is a shame, since suits are so swanky.
BUT NO MORE.

As a costume designer and colour coordinator for a comic book, I'm just amazed I've been doing almost everything right! o___o! I typically don't research colours that fit together, or textures that fit together. I just seem to have a good eye for nice combinations when I see them. All of your points above I already followed. Although I'm guilty of making suits too tight.

DJCoulz In reply to ZachSano [2012-01-31 18:49:54 +0000 UTC]
Well those guides are put in place so that the person looks good, so you much just have a better eye than some. Though it's not to hard to see when you see a low contrast character wearing like zebra stripes. It's easy to tell that somethings off, it's hard putting together the perfect color combo for each person though. Skimming your stuff you do have a really good eye for color combination!
And don't worry, alot of tailors these days, who are paid to FIT the suits make em too tight. Hahaha. Specially the pants. You can get away with mid creases when they are like action pose, but if they are just standing then there should be no stress lines. :3

:3 Yus! Thank you for the advice--and.. my comic book stars a lot of mobsters with a ton of money (And some hardcore fashion police type characters). The characters are more likely to freak out over a suit than I am and I have to design them!

Watch every Martin Scorsese film. Seriously, his suit budget alone for Robert Deniro in Casino and Goofellas must have been enough to buy a Rols Royce with. Great suit ideas out of that.
Also you should really consider investing in this book "Dressing the Man: Mastering the Art of Permanent Fashion" I learned alot of tips and tricks about suits from books, and this one was by far the most helpful. Covers all era's and the birth and death of the suit. It's like I dunno $30-$50 and it's a really nice coffee table book. And if your going to draw any amounts of suits it's definitely worth every penny! My tutorial is like the preschool version of whats in that book.
I hope that helps

I don't have any money (Yet.. anyway. Making some off of my comic book that just came out! :3 So maybe one day that will change.) So right now a book of any kind is too pricey. That's why I respect free basic tutorials like this so much. They offer advice without charging you for it. :3 And that is extremely awesome. My comic book is free to read for the same reasons.

I hope you don't get haters calling you fashion police. the kind who think tartan ties go well with dotty shirts and houndstooth jackets while wearing pin stripe pants.

I'm really bad at drawing suits, so this is really helpful for me. Thank you!
I'd like to give critique on one thing though: the tutorial's text could use some paragraphing. I had some "wall of text"-moments there. Also centering large text paragraphs is probably not the best idea. But I like the pictures, they are very easy to understand, and well drawn!

DJCoulz In reply to Czarine [2012-01-31 17:49:54 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, paragraphing and layouts are not my strong suit. I just draw stuff. XD You're just lucky I didn't have to hand write it. XD due to my dyslexia my writing looks like it's been through a fun house mirror.
