Didn't know you had dyslexia! But I'm glad you can pour out beautiful pictures instead of words!

Haha yeah, it pretty funny when people see my drawings and then they ask me to write something and it looks like I have a broken hand.

wearing suit isn't easy when you never learned it. and when you don't know how a good suit has too look like, what to combine and how to wear it, you can't really draw one that looks "right". (esp. for females XD)

Even though my bf has knowledge about this stuff ( a perfect fitting suit is just ... rarrr~♥) i would still make mistakes if i would draw one. But hopefully not thanks to your tutorial *favs*
I didn't knew the stuff with the contrast, thanks for pointing that out

DJCoulz In reply to vanlau [2012-01-31 17:51:54 +0000 UTC]

Haha yeah, most people don't know it's basically like a scientific formula to create the perfect silhouette and harmony between the suit and the wearer.

vanlau In reply to DJCoulz [2012-01-31 18:49:19 +0000 UTC]

yes yes. Nothing looks better on a men then a suit which fits perfectly.
I'd love to get one for my bf made by a good suitmaker. Luckly we both share interest in that XD

suit's ftw

Someone else said that, I don't know who he is, but I guess he looks like my version of "the most generic guy I can think of".

Yeah.. he's like, generic suave. But oddly iconic and recognizable somehow. This is him: [link]

Very helpful indeed!. Would be nice if you could do some more go into even more details, or perhaps other items of clothing too. Also you should name the guy in this tutorial Sterling Archer, he looks just like him haha.

DJCoulz In reply to Vimes-DA [2012-01-31 17:53:27 +0000 UTC]

Haha I don't know who that is, I just tried to make the most generic male face I could haha.

Again, these are the basics, I will probably be doing a more detailed one later. This is just one everyone can understand and use, basically one of beginners. I will try to make an intermediate one soon!

Nice, I like forward to it . Archer is an animated comedy about a spy agency, but he has a generic ish face also and is always wearing a suit, also similar hair style [link]

stoffkimba In reply to ??? [2012-01-31 15:58:56 +0000 UTC]

wow. this is not only very useful for drawing men in suits, but also for _clothing_ them (real life guys) in suits. will try on my "high contrast" bf next chance I get. ^o^
also, you're so right about the whole mismatching suits on TV thing. (if they are wearing suits or anything remotely nice, at all) my mom is a professional tailor and she totally fell in love with asian tv series because "everyone is dressed so nicely, and the men all wear nice suits"...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DJCoulz In reply to stoffkimba [2012-01-31 17:57:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah the contrast and color pallets work with all clothes and genders. And yeah mens suits have slowly become more "lazy" with the times, less higly trained tailors, and alot less bolder decisions. Colored suits are rare so on tv you just see a bunch of bland "safe" colored and cut cookie cutter suits. Not like in the 30's were everyone wore all kinds of colored suits and things.

Definitely going to the Tutorial favorites.
Suits are a man's best apparel. Quote Barney, they are the sartorial equivalent to a baby's smile. You can never go anywhere in a suit and look dumb.
I have to point out, though, that some of the fits, like in pants, and not very flattering. I may not be an expert in this area, but I've read GQ for some time, and here's the dish:
When it comes to fit, pants really need to have little break(the length of the pant leg from the hips to the foot), stopping at the ankle, or even better, where the tops of your shoes are located. It doesn't matter if the character's wearing loafers, laceups or sneakers; the rule is that they stop and tap on the tops of the shoes.
This style is very current nowadays, but is really for the brave of heart. In the older days they tend to have a fuller break(longer pant leg).
Second, the cuff: to be or not to be? It really doesn't matter; but the cuff serves as weight so the pants fall better, avoiding the scrunching up one's calves. So if there is a cuff, the pants act more towards gravity.
Also, when it comes to cuffs, large tie+large lapel=large cuff, while narrow tie+narrow lapel=narrow cuff.
This rule also applies to the other parts of the suit, such as how much of the long-sleeved shirt(dress shirt)'s cuffs show. Narrow=narrow, large=large.
The fit on the body needs to accentuate the figure; it needs to pinch rather than choke; hug rather than hang. The suit creates a V for the torso; making for a slicker silhouette. It does not hang like a rectangle.
There are also several different cloths for suits; each different for the seasons. Heavier, thicker cloths like wool, tweed and corduroy are suitable for winter, while cotton, linen and seersucker are for summer. They have different textures, so might as well put that tidbit there.

Again, all those things would go into another tutorial that has the finer details and specifics, which I am planning to do. This is just the most basic of construction and color tips. I could probably do 4 more tutorials and barley touch on ann the details of cut, drape, fit, era, novelty, use, seasons, fabrics, and all that. Shoot I could probably make an entire tutorial about the right kinds of socks with the suit. XD

SailorKnightWing In reply to ??? [2012-01-31 14:52:22 +0000 UTC]

This is a really great guide. I'd like to add a random bit of trivia: at least in the lawyer world, only inexperienced men wear blue suits. If a man in a law firm is wearing a blue suit, he's at the bottom of the firm. I don't know if this also applies to women, or in any other profession.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DJCoulz In reply to SailorKnightWing [2012-01-31 18:42:20 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, maybe it's more a psychology thing or just an era thing, A man might look better in a blue suit than a black one, but I think Blacks and greys are the more universal suits now. Plus after the 80's Blue suits kind of went out of style. Tailors have gotten more "Safe" and "Cookie cutter" with their suits. They don't take as much chances with how they dress business or Lawyer types. So I would think that if someone showed up in a blue suit it would be strange, and you don't really want the "free wielding crazy blue suit guy" as your man. Hahaha.

It was different in the 1930's, everyone knew their color combination (it was printed in every mens magazine) so everyone wore colors! Colors and patterns, seasonal prints and fabrics. Now even tailors have a hard time figuring out people colors and shape, so people are far less likely to chance wearing something colorful since it could easily go wrong. Not enough color professionals in the world anymore. XD
