Created by Jason DeMarco and Sean Akins, the famous Cartoon Network programming block introduced millions of westerners to the exciting, wonderful, and gritty world of anime. It began on March 17, 1997 and was originally hosted by Space Ghost villain Moltar and showcased action-animation and often aired on the weekday afternoons.

Then on July 10, 1999, Toonami received a major overhaul. It introduced the ship Absolution and its robotic host T.O.M. as well as the introduction of the late-night 5 hour block the Midnight Run. This change would bring several anime into pop culture with shows such as Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, YuYu Hakusho, and Gundam. The block's schedule, its host, and the Absolution would all evolve over the years while introducing brand new programming. This would all come to an end in September 20, 2008 with the cancellation of Toonami and a final farewell from T.O.M. who was in his fourth incarnation at the time. No form of Toonami would exist in the air...until April 1, 2012.

Adult Swim on this night usually begins to play the cult film The Room...only for it to suddenly switch to a new model of T.O.M. aboard the Absolution and proceeding to host Toonami throughout the night to the surprise of happy viewers. After the prank was finished airing, Adult Swim took to social media asked the audience if they wanted the famed anime-block to return. They later confirmed on May 16, 2012 that Toonami would indeed return in 10 days with a shifted focus on brand new, less kid-friendly anime such as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, InuYasha, Bleach, Naruto, Ghost in the Shell, One Piece, Deadman Wonderland, Cowboy Bebop, Sword Art Online, and Soul Eater.

The block as of today currently airs the shows My Hero Academia, One Punch Man, Dragon Ball Super, Boruto, Attack on Titan, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Naruto: Shippuden, FLCL, Black Clover, Hunter X Hunter, Lupin the Third, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Jack.
