Description This is a view of a house centipede, Scutigera sp., seen on a night hike to a lagoon near base camp.

Yurubí National Park.

If anyone can ID this centipede, I would be very thankful. The markings and tibial setae are not consistent with S. coleoptrata.

Okay, now I'm going to have nightmares tonight. I think it's called the "Icky" Centipede. Actually I think they should all be called that. LOL Can you tell I don't like centipedes?

I've hated/feared these things for years now. Being one of the hardest pests to get out of your house and all. Despite that they seem to go a lot of good for a home. They won't get into or eat your food. They eat all kinds of mites, spiders([link] ) and other house hold pest.

These are great photos. I find the more I look at images of them the less disgust I feel. These are sure to help.

I should show this to my brother... He's petrified of these. I gave him a bat once and he overcame his fear for a minute as he beat the fucking shit out of one... I was so proud.

They're actually kind of beautiful up close.

That's terrible. I do not condone or encourage animal violence.

Animal? Centipedes are bugs. Last I checked it wasn't illegal to kill a bug.

Centipedes I might understand (although I don't agree). Beating a bat to death, no. It's not illegal to kill a dog or a cat, either; it still doesn't make it right.

I meant I gave my brother a bat as in a baseball bat with which to beat the centipede.

Thank you! They're actually not insects, they belong to the related group Myriapoda.

LOL! to other insects, OH YEAH! They're venom is very effective on other insects and spiders.
to most humans, no,
however, just like some folks & peanuts, allergies can make even simple stuff a killer.

All centipedes are venomous and potentially dangerous. They're aggressive, agile hunters that won't hesitate to bite if disturbed. Only handle them if you know what you're doing.

I didn't know they had centipedes other than the long, round, and black ones.

The round ones are actually millipedes. All centipedes have flattened bodies. Three of the orders look pretty similar (Lithobiomorpha, Craterostigmomorpha and Scolopendromorpha), one looks like a flattened millipede because of the many, many legs (Geophilomorpha) and the fifth is is the one this centipede belongs to, the Scutigeromorpha, that has very long legs and is very, very fast.
