I imagine there's more to the story...
As a boy, before he got his Coltie mark, Shiny was small and scrawny. He was bullied in school. He had the love of his parents and his baby sister to help him through these dark times.
But eventually Shiny got tired of the pain. And he realized that his sister would one day leave her chessboard and venture out into the big bad world and face the same troubles as him.
So Shiny started lifting weights. Bulking up. Getting strong. Getting ready.
And the day came in magic kindergarten when a bunch of older kids starting pushing Twily around.
So Shiny used his magic to protect his baby sister and chase the older bullies away.
For his courage and bravery, he gained his Coltie mark. It represented his newly discovered talented at protecting those who needed it most.
Not long after, Shiny signed up for Cadet school to join the Royal Guard.
