sorry to say but thats not true, ya see the game had exsisted for 2 years before the north american home console version came out. When that version came out they obected to having female enemys in the game (nintendo had a no violence against women rule back then). capcom sugested they make her into a "newhalf". that idea was imediately shot down and the characters poison and roxy where replaced with teo different characters (male) billy and cid. of course the seed was planted and the confusion was escalated as capcom mocked that old joke more then a few times. because the japanese don't have a problem that sort of thing, the current consensus acording to the original designer is that it could be male but its up to the player to decide.
unlike that character from guilty gear or tsubasa from ranma who are males for sure.

that idea came from the north american version, but it was shot down right away. (think about it they where fussy about allowing cleaving and hitting women . do you think they would allow a tranny in a game. the character had exsisted for two years in japan before the idea was even brought up.

I can finally comment here now that I did some Googling, so Poison is from the original street fighter game called Final Fight when marketing the game here the American audience didn't like that they were hitting a girl so they made her into a him who became she (I guess it lit out inner homophobic rage?). So in the creator cannon she's girl, in America she's post op transvestite so her outy is now an inny and in japan she's a shemale/new half and just tucks in her bits.
She is quite possibly the most VERSATILE character in existence I can't imagine another character that can be whatever the audience wants without unless you want to technical breaking the cannon, you sir did an excellent job in capturing the whole shebang.

she wasn't turned into a man her character sprite was replaced with a different male character billy (and sid to replace roxy). they did suggest it that she could be a newhalf to keep her in the game but that idea was shot down right away. i guess its easy to confuse replacing the sprite with a male with having a sex change. capcom does have sense of homour about this and continues to mock it.
