You know, if Mother Gothel wasn't a villain she'd make a wonderful mother. I love her character. They made her niceness so believable and that adds on to the evilness of her character.

...if that makes sense.

That's true, she's not a good person (especially in light of the series) but she's so convincing I remember leaving the theatre after seeing the film for the first time wishing she'd been redeemed so Rapunzel could have another mummy.Β  Plus Rapunzel is such a good person I want her to have all the love in the world.Β  To this day I'm still not convinced Mother Gothel wasn't completely disingenuous about her affections.

It would’ve been so interesting if mother gothel was rapunzel’s real mother!Β

Notice:Β  Gothel only shows affection to Rapunzel hair

If only Mother Gothel was a good mom and not an abusive villain.Β

(Her "niceness" is pretty believable and manipulative though, I agree with you there.)

Can any of you artists make a drawing of a female boxing match between Rapunzel and Mother Gothel? And see if you can make a little comic strip of it? Contact me soon.

It does, actually.

I'm more inclined to believe that she DID hold affection for her child, but that her ambitions took first place for her.

Haha, glad someone else saw a little nice side to her... because she reminds me of my cousin so much, apart from the fact that my cousin is a really nice person

I never really liked mother gothel but after reading the comments and looking at this picture, I kinda think when she was being nice she was a nice mother.

Gimme some examples. I've only looked at the songs so far and while she seems KINDA nice, she keeps insulting Rapunzel.....

I feel the same way. I can't view her as a villain really (up until the end obviously) and saw she would have been a wonderful mother for those little parts.

I agree with what you say. As a baby-sitter I can tell you, that when you get a shy kid instead of rambunctious brats who like messing with their baby sitter to sit instead, they sort of grow on you. Even if their clingy-ness make make you uncomfortable at first, you warm up to them. You just can't help it.

And if it's like that for a baby-sitter, it must be doubled effects for a surrogate mother. Despite her original intentions and desires for stealing Rapunzel away, I'm pretty sure that Gothel couldn't resist getting attached to the little girl. I mean, when you see Gothel brushing a little Rapunzel's hair and Rapunzel calls her "mommy" -- how can you say that's not a bit cute?

However, her vanity overpowered her motherly feelings in the end, and it was her undoing. I also think there was a bit of hurt in her eyes when Rapunzel said "Or should I even call you that?" But that's just my opinion. Either way, you can tell Rapunzel still cares for the woman who raised her for 18 years when Gothel falls out of the window and Rapunzel instinctively reaches for her despite being, what?, 4 feet-ish away from her.

The thing about Mother Gothel is that she was actually one of the most abusive parents in Disney history; only all of her abuse was verbal/emotional. She used fear to keep Rapunzel in the tower, and manipulated her to no end. And when you listen to the lyrics of "Mother Knows Best" and the reprise, she's constantly insulting Rapunzel and tearing down her confidence.

Technicalities aside, very nice picture.

She was worried about her then worried about her hair. It switched so often but she did love her. :3

I agree. There were times when Mother Gothel was incredibly caring and nice with Rapunzel and you could tell that she actually felt like a mother figure to her.

This was my favorite relationship in the film: Rapunzel and Gothel's mother-daughter relationship. It was so complex and realistic and wonderful. You've captured their love perfectly here. This drawing is very sweet and I love the colors and Rapunzel's eyes and smile. Excellent job.

.....really?

She'd be a HORRIBLE mother! Did you see how self centered she was...and how she like...always insulted poor Rapunzel! Gah, I wanted to punch her in the face >.>

Though, yes...when she was nice, it was incredibly believable xDDD

i have to agree with you. ^^ she really did feel like a sincere mother at some points. I do think that, despite the fact she kept Rapunzel out of greed to use the power of her hair, she did develop maternal feelings for her.

Very nice picture ^^
