You can create rounded corners in gimp with the rectangle selection tool. When you make a selection then you can adjust it from the toolbox window. It has a "rounded corners" option which when you select will allow you to edit the radius. You can also then readjust or fine-tune the selection's size and position too with the size/placement values. If you also add fuzziness the selection will seem to be fading-out at the edges.

I'd just make awn flat with that grey color non-transparent, with corner radius 0 and a black semi-transparent inner-border and a completely transparent outer border and highlights.

Because the theme is set to transparent.

I could but I like it completely transparent. I eventually worked out how to do it anyway.

Thanks mate, I am using:
AWN as my dock
Faenza as my icon set, and the customised icons in AWN are Token.
Elementary GTK (as usual) as my theme
and two instances of conky. That is about it.
