Description
What it is-->Avatar: Earth AmuletThe project was to create a dome and cut away the top so that the bezel setting showed through to be the main focus. The shadows created by this 'said' opening were to add to the piece. This became my largest project and heaviest as the actual piece is 3 inches in diameter.
I made this amulet as a gift for my best friend. She LOVES Avatar and Toph seemed to be her favorite. So, I took the earth symbol, combined it with metal and waaalaaa! Its an amulet fit for a metal bender...or my best friend.

Oh wow, it's very nice! I'm not that great with piercing; your work puts mine to shame. I love Avatar, too!

Well, if it helps your work at all, you probably are able to do your work at home or in a shop. You probably figured stuff out on your own and have basically taught yourself.
Me...I was in class and had a great grandfatherly like instructor. So, I think our work is equal and neither puts anything to shame.
They are both great in their own way and look lovely. I will admit that I love this type of work and would love to continue in it. I had a blast and in all honesty, I think I have a talent for it. But dont sell yourself short, your work is just as grand and beautiful. The two peas in a pod always come to mind.
So...final words? OUR work is grand. Hahaha

Hah, thank you! I'm entirely self-taught via You Tube videos and online text tutorials. I arc off in so many different directions all the time so I never really spend a lot of time learning any one thing. I'll bead for a bit (finishing a project now!) then move to chainmaille, wire work or metalwork.
I'm more interested in moving metal/metal forming (anticlastic raising and fold forming mostly) than stone setting so there's always something to learn.
You definitely have a talent for it!

Thank you, very much.
I can honestly tell you that she loved it.
I gave it to her with a silver chain for decoration and I think she nearly cried! This was a very hard project just because of the size.
Other than that...it was fine.
Thank you for the compliment, and I didnt know you liked Toph??? She sure was a cutie.

My best friend is she commented on this as well. And to answer your question...she wrote me an email telling me all that she couldnt say here on DA. It included that she was special and everyone else obviously sucked because they didnt get such a piece.
She was having fun and absolutely adored it.
I think later I will post pictures onto Stash for you to see of us together.

The stone is probably Hematite, a fairly prevalent silver-grey gemstone.
That said, very nice work overall, interesting design.
The only thing which looks a bit off, is the bottom right edge of the circular cutout.
But that could also be due to the picture

DOC-Ash1391 In reply to outis-9 [2013-01-03 23:03:43 +0000 UTC]
HEMATITE!!!
That struck a bell. That's what its called.
When ever someone would ask me what the stone was called while in class, I said it was called something with an H. I think you hit the mark!
And thank you for the compliment. I looked at the right edge that you said and have to tell you that it is off. Its not the photo. When I was cutting, because we had to cut it out AFTER it was domed, some things didnt exactly stay straight as they were supposed to. So...your eyes do not deceive you.
Again, thank you for an awesome comment.
Have a great day.
Stay safe.

(i think the stone is called onyx.... not sure.)
was the cutting hard? it looks very difficult (and amazing )
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DOC-Ash1391 In reply to JellicleCatKivu [2013-01-03 23:05:28 +0000 UTC]
Its not onyx. Onyx is a...rougher? stone I believe.
Someone came up with the name which triggered my memory. Its a hematite. Shiny and blackish silver.
The cutting was indeed hard because I had to cut it out while it was domed. This made cutting out the smaller areas very difficult because they were prone to bending inwards. So...it was really slow going.
Thank you very much.

Not to give myself a big head or sound pompous, but I tend to always put a great amount of time and work into a project for someone. It was just really cool that someone other than me and the receivers...saw that. So thank you for stroking my ego today!
I hope you have a wonderful day and that you stay safe.

That's some nice work, kiddo! I know what a difficult task that must have been to cut this well. Looks smooth to me. I wish that you would have made to hanger point a little beefier.

DOC-Ash1391 In reply to engineermk2004 [2013-01-02 20:13:11 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much.
This was a relatively easy project, but what made it difficult was the size. The hanger point is rather small, but I felt that any bigger it would have taken away from the piece in whole. Because I made this as something to be displayed and not worn, I took liberties with the hanger thing. Trust me, if It was made to be worn...the thing would have been a whole lot beefier!
Thank you for your nice compliment.
See you around, hope you have a wonderful day and stay safe.
