Description That is THE Venture Brothers skull on that monitor. And if you are wondering; Jackson's desk is twice as tidy, and he has one of those Wacom monitors you can draw on. Jealous? I kinda am. But he still has a G4, and baby, mine is a G5... That is one more "G"!

It's After Effects, not Flash. And that omelet thing is a piece of canvas that I was using to wipe off brushes.

Looks pretty much the same. But yeah, two flat screen monitors now.

Wanted to let you guys at Astrobase Go know that I'm a huge fan of the Venture Bros, and knowing that there are renaissance men, and truly creative artists out there has inspired me to continue my artistic pursuits. I never really gave them up, but in our society, creativity & complexity gets discouraged, because it takes time. VB is the only show where I feel as though it's drawing dialog, characters & plots directly from my subconscious. Also, I adore the lighting & contrast in your paintings, Doc. It's reminiscent of the Baroque, but some of the composition echoes the Renaissance, and the details and emotionality suggest to me a thrust of realism. Few modern painters I've seen have brought together such elements, let alone put them in such balance and harmony that the subject is done justice, so my sincere respect.

Whats not to like on the workspace, got what every guy needs, a computer, cigarettes, a purple topless chick (a must in the modern office) on screen and what looks like a folded nan bread (tho i could be wrong). All that's missing is a Gameboy, the old chunky version.

So I'm not the ONLY one with giant out-dated monitors? What a relief! What a beautiful set-up. I pretend mine looks like that. It's not too far off, but it lacks a certain flare... plus mine is ever-moving, since I'm between housing all the time. In short, I feel better about my studio after looking at this!

I'm sorry, it's unrelated but I must know. What soundboard/mics do you use for recording and transferring voices? I am always impressed by how clear the voices are - especially in comparison to my recordings using my crappy four track.

We use an AKG C 414 B-XLS... It's about a thousand dollar microphone. Worth it if you are recording voices for broadcast. But I've heard good results from a $100 Sure SM58.

Good God this desk reminds me of my boyfriend's desk though he has 2 gigantic CRT monitors from IBM that weigh like 100 pounds each....but you are right about one thing they are easier to work on than flat panels. When I watch the venture bros. on my laptop it looks like total crap cause the colors aren't quite right, but when we watch them on his huge monitors it looks totally awesome. And most of his digital designs look better on those than on our laptops.

Doc-Hammer In reply to cookiecucco [2008-09-27 23:20:20 +0000 UTC]

They are perfect for calibrating to the colors of a printer, or an NTSC screen. The other kind shifts in tone and dark-to-light relationships if you move your head off center.

Sadly, they forced an upgrade on me. I now have duel cinema ratio, flat screens. And yes, I find them inferior. But they do take up less room. So... I have that... At least.

cookiecucco In reply to Doc-Hammer [2008-09-29 01:39:20 +0000 UTC]

You have a very good point there about the whole moving your head thing. That's too bad they forced you to upgrade... but at least your desk is a little less cluttered. Or better yet, now you have more room to pile some more awesome skulls around the desk!

I find black desks strangely attractive, they say brown wood and black don't mix, but I think there's some chemistry there (don't tell my wife I said that )

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Doc-Hammer In reply to Prime-Minister-Desk [2007-06-14 20:21:19 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree. There is an historical precedence for that combination. I mean, the black leather-toped, wood desk is a classic. But in the case of my desk, the black top is not on wood, but a gray steel body. It has a patina of elegant scratches and damage that does give it a wood grain effect. But it's painted metal. Now I realize you are a desk man, but just look at that chair. Perfectly worn.

Ah! This picture makes me sad! For so many years, I'd been putting off learning how to use a Mac. The only Macs I had been exposed to were these atrocious iBooks and the even worse Macs where the entire computer was in the monitor. Consequentially, I was raised a PC girl, meself.

After a while, I got more into the arts, and I really started thinking that maybe I should suck it up and learn how to use a Mac because the PC versions of the software is kinda shotty. But did I? No, because I was stubborn.

And then the photo department at my job (a newspaper) got all new gorgeous G5's right when the G5 first came out. It looked sooooo good, and it was so incredibly sexy. But I was hesitant to learn how to use it.

I ended up leaving the job shortly afterwards, and moving to the other side of the country. Never getting to learn how to use a Mac proficiently.

Ack! [link]
Sadness

Nothing to regret. Macs are so easy to use, that you will be working fine in the first ten minutes. Sure, you may feel a bit hobbled. But, you will stop feeling the lag (that accompanies changing long used shortcuts) in under a week. So, next time you get the opportunity, hop on. It's nothing to fear.

Alzbeta In reply to Doc-Hammer [2007-05-09 09:08:27 +0000 UTC]

I had this suspicion, for the longest time, that Macs were for people that didn't know how to use a computer, and I didn't want to be brought down to that level. (Yes, it was very narrow-minded and snobby of me. Don't hold it against me! I've grown.) But I thought I'd be a little more open-minded about it, and give 'em a shot when they were brought into my work place. We had a few in the web department, and it took me a week to even learn to do the programming on it, and I had deadlines, so I couldn't spend the time on the learning curve.

That same week, this random guy (a Mac Luser) contacted me saying he wanted me to build him two websites. "What kind of websites would you like me to build you? Personal or professional?" "I want one normal, and one flash." "Okay, I can do that, but what kind of sites?" He paused, and said "Normal, and flash...but....What is flash?" I was dumbfounded. Here's this guy telling me he wanted a flash website who didn't know what flash was. "I have heard of this wonderful brand of flash website," he told me, "but I really don't know what it is. I just know that I want one." - This same person wanted me to make him some podcasts, but didn't know that podcasts and iPods were two different things.

He just confirmed my suspicions that most people who used Macs were morons, and I sorta put off the Mac thing, and stuck to the PC. Now I wish I hadn't. It'd be a handy skill.

Ah. C'est la vie. I'll take your advice next chance I have to use one. (My apologies for being lengthy - I'm in one of those writing moods.) ^_^

Just because PCs are problematic and require the user to have to look at a 1992 green DOS screen occasionally, doesn't make them better. You seem to be mad at Mac for making a computer that lets you spend your time creating, not trying to re-boot.

The same logic that you use by looking at one Mac user and thinking "That's all of them" could be easily applied to the converse. Everybody I know uses a Mac. It's the business I'm in. Who do I know that uses a PC? My mom and my grandmother. Yeah, they email me "cute" things they found online. So I guess all PC users are old ladies surfing for pie recipes... Right?

Not only did Mac create the interface you are now looking at a forgery of, they allow you to go as deep as you want. You want to log in to the terminal and screw around with your computer, go ahead (cat/copy Unix/DOS Apple/Orange). Do the research and avoid the propaganda. Check out some literature on Open Source and decide for yourself. For me, I didn't make the decision... The industry did. Printing presses use Mac. Adobe designs for Mac first. And the work I do for broadcast is all in the QuickTime matrix. Mac invented that (Yes, they share it with everybody).

Look, I don't work for Mac, and wouldn't care if your computer was two tin cans sharing a length of string. But if I used your logic of "I can't use something that idiots use", I wouldn't be able to wear shoes.

lol, yeah, I totally see your point. I've grown considerably in the past several years. The more knowledge I acquired, the more open minded I have become. For the past 3 years, I have wanted to expand my skill set without even being near a Mac lol, so I think it's called karma for being so narrow-minded about it in the first place. This ordeal has been good for me. ^_^ Take care.
