FINALLY DONE! After a year and half (because I suck) here’s my version of ’s Genre Challenge meme (I know my name is on it, but like a lazy 6th grader at the science fair, I just slapped my name on the tag board and let my partner do all the work while I played videogames) I would have had it done sooner but decided to change my art style, so I had to start over... I’m weird like that.Let’s run it down:
-Box 1: MY CHARACTER. Jiang “Rio” Gordon, chainsaw wielding second generation demon hunter, kind of an asshole.
-Box 2: HORROR. Rio’s already a Horror genre story, so I drew her an undead slasher, to see how the other half lives... her normal self does not like this.
-Box 3: SCI-FI. Jiang is one of those space pirates from one of those asian heavy futures the 80’s loved so much, her alien side kick is just fun.
-Box 4: WUXIA. I’m still not sure I got Wuxia right, but here’s Rio as her ancestor Genghis Khan.
-Box 5: FANTASY. Rio as Queen Boudicca [link] a comic I need to work on only slightly less then more Rio. FOR NARNIA!!!! (I can’t help think that’s what she’s saysing)
-Box 6: WAR. Robopocylpse instead of Zombiepocylpse, Rio will never win.
-Box 7: PULP ADVENTURE: The Chronicles of Jiang Gordon: The Curse of the Mummy’s Curse (that’s right it’s a cross over!)[link]
-Box 8: CRIME! well... NOIR! I guess, Jiang is the number one enforcer for the Triad kingpin known only as “the Boss”
-Box 9: WESTERN. I was playing ‘Undead Nightmare’ when I drew this... so Rio is just cosplaying Jack Marston. I have not played the zombie-less version of that game yet.
-Box 10: ARTIST CHOICE: THE KING OF FIGHTERS! Which I always think should be called “the King of THE Fighters” but anyway I digress, she looks more like a win pose then a sprite but, eh, close enough... she’s in Terry’s stance because she’s awesome (I assume she plays like a mix of Terry and Guile. Charge based brawler throwing Sonic Booms and a Flash kick, with a Burn Knuckle, Crack Shot, Power Wave, and Buster Wolf. because that’s the kind of character I would like to use in a game.)

The curse of the mummy's curse (with mummies)! Is that Canopic jar a penguin?
By Wuxia I meant the genre of Chinese Kung Fu movie that is to Chinese history what Fantasy is to the European Dark/Middle Ages, so Genghis Rio works just fine. I like how default Rio is chainsawing Horror Rio (and the word "fiction").

I still feel like I might have ‘cheated’ Wuxia though, like I know ‘Mongol' is a Chinese film about Chinese history but there’s no kung-fu (although I suppose nothing about ‘Fantasty’ says you NEED to include elves or dragons or something making it clearly not ‘realistic Medieval’ so maybe I’m putting much thought into it.)
also, I wish I could say it was a penguin, but it’s just a bird... but it does look penguiny-ish is I *WILL* take credit for that, yep! it’s a penguin canopic jar alright! I planned that

I'm not sure where exactly one would draw the line, I mean Curse of the Golden Flower is a historical movie but it's also a fantasy Kung Fu movie (unless the Imperial Pharmacist fighting off a ninja ambush really happened that way). There are Wuxia movies with Mongols in them, although they're usually bad guys - they're the antagonists at the beginning of Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (and then mysteriously vanish) and there's a Mongol competitor in the big all-Asia martial arts tournament in Master of the Flying Guillotine, so it certainly works.
In a way this is the problem at the heart of assigning fiction to genres - it may just not work (he said, after writing a meme based on it). For example, a story about ninjas, policeguys, black ops guys and sexy archaeology might be a little hard to place.
