Description Been working on this one for a little while, and I wanted it to show. I love the Victorian age, classical music, steam engines – that era and ethos, and I am an admitted romantic, so this is my little ode to that. Whether or not this is Victorian London, the Old West, or whereever, I shall leave to the viewer. Is the serenade between acquaintances, is she intrigued by the music he plays, or by the man…?

I plan to do some more like this or in other mediums down the road, but this is the big project for the moment. More practice and experience using good inking techniques. I’m pleased with how it turned out. I have to find or make the perfect reference photos, and this one took some time to track down and then incorporate into a good composition, but I am, in the end, SO pleased and must extend a hearty thanks to the dA community for making such great images and inspiration available, especially (obviously) the below stock accounts. In Any case, this was also partially a bet to myself - My dad saw my latest works this past winter and said, "Don't you like Victoriana?" "Of course - you know I do," I replied. At which point he rightly pointed out that none of my art reflected that, so I started composing ideas for this, and here it is...

15-20 hours, pen & ink (micron) on 81/2 x 11ish paper (my dimensions are never perfect).

Great work, very detailed yet 'readable', integrating finely various sources blended in a common style.
Only minor problem: the woman seems frozen, lifeless.
I can hardly explain why I feel that, because I often fall in this trap myself...

DocRedfield In reply to philho [2007-06-05 19:37:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you... Well, the Victorian era can't be TOO passionate... I really feel that this one is a culmination of style, though, so I can hardly complain.
Thanks again!

Hey Scott. I really think you have outdone yourself, in that it has all the elements of a great illustration: nice lines, intrigue, and good composition. Trains are such a pain to draw, but you have done well, my friend. And all the while maintaining a fine, fine level of detail.

I absolutely adore that clock (along with her dress). Keep up the excellent work! Looks like a fave to me.

Thanks, Bob... your comments (and FAVE!) are very much appreciated on this piece... I wasn't sure if you had seen it or not, but I'm glad the craftsmanship is up to snuff.
I had almost finished the composition when I realized that the station needed the clock...

What a beautiful piece! I like this scene very much. I've always loved the violin. The detail in the train, her dress, the platform itself is wonderful. I also like her flowing curls. Great job! It was well-worth the 15-20 hours.

So much to admire, I don't know where to begin. I love how you've tackled the lady - all the textures, the ruffles in her dress, her wavy locks of hair. Stunning work. And then there's the brilliant treatment of the locomotive and the musician. You've excelled yourself, Scott. I love it
