Description lights that last forever

the surface was sublime,
you had to touch it
to really connect
with what I was trying to lay down

it's all spilling out lately,
she just called it spillage,
and once said,
“not everything you say or think
have to be seen or heard.”
think she could be right

there is no doubt she fit the bill
otherwise she would never have spoke

lights that last forever
into the slippery wetness,
I watch the river soar by
at times it slows unplanned
untold tales of the river,
like Painted Woods below the tree-line

from the days remains
like the deeds undone
and what the eve will bring

yo great
it's a shame i don't seem to able to make alien collages
maybe that's because the materials can be so easily identified as terrestrial ?

the rest of my party
followed close behind
watching my every move
for my every motion,
I signaled for 3 to follow
around the side and wait
cross-bows and patience to hold onto,
then I pounded on the edge of the gate
with a metal object I had brought along,
the sounds woke the dead
and the gatekeeper sleeping not far off

on the other side of the gate
silence and a faint glow
we noticed we had hesitated
for a bit too long
when we perceived rumblings
from behind and above us

DocSonian In reply to KatDiestel [2010-01-10 14:50:19 +0000 UTC]

they flew in low
and arced over us again
peering down,
then they spread out and took positions,
four sat on a long branch above the men
and stared down in total silence
with just an occasional side to side motion
the rest just took places behind us,
I wondered why they had shown up so early
but realized it was inevitable,
so just watched the gatekeeper walk slowly towards us
looking like he had just woken up to a bad dream

the gate slowly opened inch by inch
not emitting the rusty sound we had imagined
greenish light soaked through the clearance

we did not know where to look at
above and behind us the winged creatures
to our left the wicked gatekeeper
to our right the cold, rocky wall

we were in desperate need of a miracle

standing before the wall
the men began to move in
and the birds watched
miracles came when you least expect them
and this time was overdue,
the gatekeeper pointed where we should settle in
and the birds crowed and began to fly off
one at a time
as the last man entered the fortress.
the met high above in formation
and headed back home
to the golden coast of Eldorado

and as we made ourselves comfortable
stretching our aching bones
putting our weapons at our feet
at last
we were thinking about
all the hardship and deprivations
we had suffered
every man for himself

and the three females seemed less tired of all,
they crowded together in the corner
sharpening their blades
laughing at some of the men
flat on their backs,
one stood and said to the rest of the group,
"It is time we make some decisions, you men
wait forever to decide, but now is the time,"
with that one of Vector's Priests approached and said,
"you may stay here for the evening, we will find you proper quarters tomorrow and
you will needed in the morning,
sleep well tonight,
it all will begin by weeks end,"
on that note everyone looked at each other cautiously
then one of the men stood and began to build a fire
in the hearth on the far side of the huge room

it was always the females
sturdy, relentless, with their weapons ready

we had almost given up
seeing them as part of our species
and who could have told at that time

it was only later
that things started making sense
by and by
but at that time
we still were at a complete loss
waiting for them to decide
in the cold, greenish light of the cave

not far below in the harbor
ships were being readied
and crews assembling below deck
preparing for their leave,
some of the animals in the pens on deck
playfully wrestled,
but some sat staring at the crates
of dried meat and gunpowder tied to the two main mastheads,
the green light from the cave on the hillside
shone down on water casting an ominous glow,
two young girls dressed in black
sat in a rowboat near the fantail
of one of the ships,
playing sailors and pirates
and holding small explosives

there was this uncanny feeling of déjà vu
i experienced looking at the cages on deck
all these creatures locked in, staring
made me feel sick to my stomach as well

i slowly turned around to look at our leader
hoping for some sign of comfort, reassurance
but i saw him as absorbed in thoughts as i had been
just a minute ago

decisions had been made the night before
and we were bound to leave very soon

sleep was the only thing left for everyone
and one by one they all dosed off
into that deep tired unconsciousness,
the night sky was lit by a million stars
and you could feel the rotation of the earth
in that subtle lost dreamlike trance
arcing slowly into the Mediterranean,
off to the horizon the wind picked up
and a dust-cloud formed
swirling and spreading from the hills,
the pounding sounds from the galloping riders
coming in hard from the east
alerted only the wild cats on the ships
in their cages, pacing back and forth

i woke before dawn
and one sideway glance
assured me of the others' presence

freezing in our clammy clothes
which had seen too many an adventure already
we were thinking the same thoughts

if we decided to bolt, it would have to be now

now or never
or forever regret,
as everyone woke
slowly stretching and focusing
on the light creeping in through the cracks
we noticed that things had changed,
our weapons were gone
and a barred wall stood where the entrance once was,
we decided to take leave of our promises to The Crown
and slipped through into the back
into the darkness of the far depths of the cave
where a dozen labyrinth of passages awaited us,
we lit torches and started in
deep into the blackness and the unknown

oh the muffled sounds
of our soles on the slithery ground
the flickering streaks
of reddish light on the cave walls
and our hearts
pumping pumping
as we entered deeper and deeper
into this womb-like cave
with its labyrinth
forcing us to make decisions
reluctantly choosing a path
at every pointy forking

the women led the way
looking back at the men
as they looked lost and stumbled,
"pick up the pace you slowpokes!!!"
Sasha, the youngest of the women bellowed,
she just laughed when the men said their typical responses,
and the 3 females continued forward
their well formed bodies shimmering ahead
as the red glow from the torches
made them resemble more Roman goddesses
than warriors retreating into the unknown,
the leader of the group stayed at the end of the line
making sure all made it out alive
like captain of a ship
putting his men ahead of his own life,
looking proud, he smiled as he watched Sasha up ahead
his youngest beautiful daughter taking the lead
with her cross-bow slung over her shoulder

just as he was thinking of his good luck
he heard the faint rumblings of loosened rocks
low thunder, remote grumbling
then louder echoes
things
tumbling, falling, shattering
lights
flickering, zig-zagging, darkening
vision
blurring
heart
racing
thoughts

were there still thoughts?

thoughts raced as fast as blood streams
through your veins
touching you everywhere
making you alert to everything,
the cave seemed to be imploding
taking on it's own insides
pulling in and then breathing out
in a powerful vibration,
the walls cracked and everyone
felt the power of the earth as nature took control,
the hard rocks fell at their feet
each dodging one for another,
the leader screamed out
"hold your places if you can, don't panic,"
then he saw it
the light from the darkness
and an opening appeared
like a sweet apparition
from the mist an angel stood pointing
her wings cropped down and a smile on her face
and she spoke slow and steady,
"follow the light and stay true to your course,"
with that the stunned group single-filed by and some through the angel lit beauty
and fled into the light that seemed ever closer
and the air that smelt fresh and waiting

salty and mediterranean

we inhaled like newborn babies
our lungs aching with the impact

i sat down on a flattened boulder
gazing up at the skies
that already wore their night gowns
of starlight

could it be true that we had spent a whole day
inside the cave?
one, two, three, maybe more?
i realized there was no sense of time in me left

i glanced to my right and saw
the other males, shaking their heads in disbelief

the females, however, were nowhere to be seen

time held true
as the freedom of air and light
made all this worthwhile,
it all seemed possible we were in a trance
or under some kind of curse from The Crown,
we knew no longer where we were
or where we were going
we were again strangers in the land of our enemies,
the leaders in all their religious zeal
used us like pawns in their games
and cared little for our ultimate survival as long as we were their warriors
their hired killers,
as we exited the cave i could feel water on my body
mist from the low riverbank just a few hundred meters down the bluff we found ourselves,
my two sisters and I wandered down
leaving the men to themselves
not even caring where we were,
often we tired of their ways
even though two were our brothers
and Father too of course
but the cuts on my skin from the rough walls of the cave
bled and needed cleaning,
we knelt at the water's edge and drank
and we stripped off our filthy clothes
and waded into the river,
the branches of the trees shifted
the smooth rocks beneath our feet felt good
and the coolness of the water
soothed us,
white birds flew in circles above us
and we floated and tried to relax,
the sun was setting over the treeline
and we could hear the men tromping down the path,
soon our quiet would be disturbed
and we would once again be forced back into reality,
a reality that just 5 years ago seemed more foreign to me
as the weapons we carried and evil we seemed to be working for would have appeared from my home in Florence

ah florence
how i missed that place
the palazzi in the gleaming sunlight
with their marble pillars and terraces
white islands amongst the shades of the green
luscious vegetation of parks and gardens

strolling along the pebbled paths
under mighty sycamores and cedars
slowly turning a colorful parasol
while listening to the chatter of
the other ladies
but inside following my own stream of thoughts

as they turn and turn
about now and then
and how I have to get back there
away from all the insanity and uselessness
of this dreaded life on the hunt,
back to the studio and the light
and the search for imagery
with my painter friends
and the days spent in the fields
wandering about catching the last rays of the day
reflecting on the tall high grass
and the sounds of music from the small villages,
I stare into the mist with my eyes closed
and the lost horizon of the two moons
coming over the hillside like a dream
and I am gone forever from here
all is gone
and I am back on the old bridge
looking down at the water
and happy to be back
with new thoughts in my mind,
simple as that

i slowly turned around to face my sister
she is still floating in the shallows
her face turned up to the immense skies
was she dwelling in thoughts of the past as well?

for her things had surely gone to the better
a narrow escape from the villains going after her
giacomo and his men
ever so violent and relentless
and the case of fernando's mistaken identity

this was all so far gone right now
it made you wonder which was the lesser evil
being here, in this unpleasant environment
surrounded by ignorance
or fighting in a so-called civilized world

I turn back at the small waterfall off to one side
then stare back at both my sisters
seemingly lost in their own secrets,
I try and find how to start a conversation
as if I had lost the words
to come up with
the words to say them
that may set us free
ones that would either shock
or come in some great relief
to the both of them
I find myself mute
until Sarah sees my discomfort and says
"What?"
I smile back,
"Nothing"
she grimaces,
"There is never nothing when you have that look on your face"
I look away and say,
"well it is time for us to leave the men, it is time for us to go home"
Sarah come near and turns me towards her,
"When? We are both ready, we wrere waiting for you to decide"
I smile, always knowing they knew more than I ever let on,
"Tonight after the men go to sleep, after the fires die down, when the moon is low in the sky, we will be gone. And you know we will never see any of them again, as they will most likely never forgive us and most likely will be gone in the Dead Zone before the second moon of the coming Solstice"
With that men showed and as quickly as our peace was snuffed out,my brother approached with a stupid grin on his face and dunked Sarah into the water laughing.
She came up screaming, choking out the water and I finally knew our time with them had finally come to an end,
We would be gone into the night this very eve

we slowly returned up the mountain path
always keeping three steps distance
behind our brother and the other men

as good as our decision felt,
there was some unease about it as well
a premonition?

as the evening drew closer
and the stars came up one by one
i was sitting at the camp fire
lost in thought

would we really dare to make our escape
this night?
distant rumblings announced
some heavy weather
storm clouds were chased
by the upcoming winds

the winds picking up as the night became
a black cloud on some of us
whipping around sparks from the fires
spread out around our encampment,
a few were laughing and drinking
others sleeping and talking calmly,
some sitting sharpening their weapons
and the three of us
looking occasionally at each other nervously,
i stared into the blaze
seeing abstract meandering shapes dancing about
and felt the warmth on my legs
and my face
and considered everything flooding into my thoughts.
a whirlwind of memories and more memories,
too many i thought and tried to close it all off,
and stop thinking,
wondering if anyone noticed my uncomfortableness
and staring at my sisters
waiting for the fires to die down

by and by all the men settled back
onto their sleeping mats
their breath deepening
getting slower
only disrupted by some snores
or coughs

like driven by a secret cue
the three sisters looked at each other
and slowly rose from the ground

the dying fire cast uncanny shadows
on the rocky wall to their backs
they were superimposed
like angry, wild godesses

the eldest one walked first
followed by the youngest
and me in the end

none uf us looked back

we walked as far as we could
along the edges of the forest
hoping to miss any hunting parties from the villages,
it was the middle of the night
and a new day on the plains below was coming
but we needed to rest and get some sleep
before we made the long journey across the valley
and in open territory where we might be seen,
we had not spoken much
just during occasional moments of asking how
the other was doing,
finally i had had enough and motioned
to an upcoming open area with trees surrounding
a group of large boulders giving good cover,
"I think we should stay here for awhile and decide
how much we should travel during the light hours,
it will start getting dangerous when we head
down into the valley"
everyone obviously agreed
as when we hit the small clearing
we all laid out on the grassy slope near the rocks
and nearly all at once fell into a deep sleep,
