Description
A rainy day on the Oakland Streets[link]
By The Light of the Argon
The Master Isherwood
once from the south
so deep
so far into the depths
no one ever goes down there anymore,
Now his son lives in Westwood
nightly steamy sawed off soulfests
works in a punk band called Blood
on the Strip near The Whiskey,
The bar maid owned an old truck
and parked it out back under an awning,
when it rained she'd crawl inside
and listen to college radio,
One day she gave notice at the bar
had enough of LA and the Strip
decided to drive up through Canada
through Painted Woods outside of Bismarck
then onto the Badlands
and the dark forests of the Dakotas
along the wide Missouri,
One late afternoon while putting up her tent
down past an old creek in a cul de sac
she found an old Mandan Indian stash of Custer's gold
he'd stolen from the Apaches just before Little Big Horn,
Now she's living in the South Of France
with a girl named Lilli Marlene
pretty as a bell and smart as a bell,
She loves to sit nude in the sun
and read Mark Twain
sipping on Mint Juleps in the rain

Have been trying to get a decent double exposure done, but this is not one.
But it came out quite good anyway.

into the god of sky and to the heavens
smoke billowing out of the hood
could indeed be a Grecian event

Hello, I'm not sure if you want to know this, but while this is an interesting shot, I'm not sure that it meets up with deviantArt's definition of street photography. That is to say, street photography is actually meant to showcase candid moments of humanity in the ever changing streets of the world. So this shot, while aesthetically pleasing, does not really belong in the street category, and would be better placed elsewhere.
If it helps, some good visual examples of street photography on dA can be found in #street or #The-Yard-Collective . I'm sure if you take a longer look at the available categories, you will see that there are plenty of other categories where this image would fit much better. I apologize if this seems offensive or judgmental in any way, as it certainly is not my intention to offend or insult. This message is actually part of a viral street photography education campaign started by `bQw , so feel free to direct any questions toward him.
In any case, I hope you take this information in the manner it was intended. Thank you. o

Have no problem at all with what you say. I appreciate. I really do not take all this very seriously with categories. I try and pick one, but sometimes I have no clue. Some are either too wide a berth in thought or too specific.
When i choose one it's normally painting or architectural photography (exterior). I find most of the categories trite and childish really.
I will later when i have time or maybe when i am posting another photo, will change the category to something more appropriate.
Makes sense what you say about street, as that is not what i do or am interested in doing. Seems so many have cameras on their phones etc and everyone is snapping away.
Kind of irritating especially the other eve's riots here in Oakland.
You can't make a move without someone shooting a photo or a potential You Tube video. Everyone's a photographer now.
will change and thanks.

similarly, categories have been the bane of my existence here also.

never liked categories anyway. In my business, art dealers, art collectors etc always want to categorize a painter.
What are you? they will ask
Sometimes i just answer.
Trouble

i'm always amused by the behaviour of artists... a friend of mine has a house full of his own paintings that he really needs to sell, yet each time he is offered a handsome sum for one of his works, he invariably ends up deciding that he does not want to part with it, after which he immediately goes back to moaning about how he rally needs to sell something. a passionate artist, but lousy at business.

He and I are on different trains as they say. I do recall at one point having difficulty selling a painting, but I'd sell a painting to a bird in flight. I have sold paintings to folk that did not even know they were going to buy a painting.
Your friend must have alternate means of making a living to be that cavalier. Holding his paintings at too high a value in his mind can end up where you become the biggest collector of your own work. That is a folly that will get him nowhere, but maybe he does not care.
My advise is to sell and let them go and possibly it will inspire him to paint even better paintings.
He may never be good in the art business. It can be brutal, sounds to be too sensitive.

he gets by. he has a circle of very talented and successful friends, so i sometimes wonder if he feels less worthy when compared to them, and subsequently less likely to believe in the value of his own work. it doesn't seem to bother him though, as he really does seem to enjoy art for art's sake.
agreed, i have suggested before that he clear his stockpile of past works. i think that if we surround ourselves by the past, and constantly look back to it in order to gauge what we are currently doing, we have more or less ceased to look forward, which i think is a very dangerous thing in art.
very sensitive, yes.

Seems an odd way to go for a painter, but if he is truly content in all that, what can i say but, good luck.
There are so many painters and so much competition in the world, if he feels like standing on the sidelines, maybe the best thing.
After awhile everything is so commercial, really is not what it used to be anyway.
Disposable days we are in.
