Number seven of my Birthstone Mermaids is the lovely Ruby, the official birthstone of July.

Ruby was born closest to American shores, and has seen the rise of our nation, and all of our achievements and tragedies. She was just as moved as the rest of us when 9/11 hit. The American flag she carries was plucked off the sunken ship (name unknown) you see behind her. It is her most prized possession. As a result, her sisters call her "the Patriot."

The flag was underwater for so long, the stars fell off. Actually, the idea of drawing 50 stars on such a small space would be impossible.
