Description
Wanna play? This was my final exam for my 3D Studio Max course at ITT Tech. We had to choose something elaborate to render, and I chose a chess set because I love chess. The whole thing took about 18 hours.
All the pieces, minus the knight (horsehead for those who don't play chess) were made by drawing half the piece and using Lathe to extrude it 360 degrees. For the knight, I drew the horsehead and extruded it outward. Looking from the front, it doesn't look like a horse. This made designing the knight easier.
Once they were done, the rest of it was a breeze!
The table was provided by (used with permission. Thanks!). I used raytracing to make the board reflective. A different wood material was used on the background.
As luck would have it, 3DS has a checkerboard template, which I changed the tiles to match the table, darkening it for the black tiles. I used the same wood template on the tiles.
The pieces are also shiny thanks to the lights on either side of the board. For some reason, the pieces don't cast shadows (Never resolved that one
I passed with flying colors!

COOL! Recently I tried to make smth. in 3Dmax but it took me so much time, that I decided to save my nerves and eyes. The picture you've made is brilliant!!!
Are you going to make smth. else?

Not sure. I made this in school, and we're not using this program this quarter. But I would love to animate the pieces.
And thank you!

Heya, thanks for using my wood texture for your latest artwork.
A few suggestions:
1. In 3dsmax you need to enable one option first for casting shadows.. you will find this one within the light source settings as far i know.
2. The textures on the background looks far to blurry.
3. It's hard to notice a difference between the white and the black figures.. you should tweek the material abit more clearly.
Just my 2 cents.
cheers steno

Wow ... this is very different than what I usually see in your gallery, and I adore it! The thought of working on this for so long kinda makes my head hurt, but seeing how well it turned out makes everything better, ne? ^^ Gorgeous work! If you hadn't passed, I'd be calling your professor.
