You can almost hear Ciel screaming, "NOOOOOOOOO!!!" as she find the branch just out of reach... their only way out and she can't reach it. Meanwhile, Erika seems to be either wrapping her arms around Ciel, or she could be resuming her futile struggle against the mud. It looks like she has a strained look in her face, and she appears to be clenching her fists and twisting at her torso with her muddy arms swinging out to add momentum and force to her struggles.
Even if Ciel could've reached the branch, as deeply mired in the mud as these two women are, they might not be able to break free of the suction gripping their bodies. This is not looking good for these ladies.

Thanks for the nice comments, and although it does seem hopeless for them, I usually like to make sure characters are in no real danger, or make it out alive via dues ex machina, although I'm not sure if I'll ever do a follow up to this, so you never know this could be an exception.

You're welcome! And, yep, there could be a happy ending for them, although they're going to need some serious help from someone if they're going to get free of that mud... you certainly did a nice job drawing it very sticky and full of suction.

I'd say that you've illustrated this make-or-break situation well! Now that the two have managed to find a branch to hold onto, the problem now is that they've sunken to a depth that makes it difficult for them to reach their one and only lifeline: that lone branch on the wall, with the added burden of Erika holding to Ciel in fear of going under, which will just weigh both of them down, causing them to sink faster. I also like how both of them get coated as they go further down into the quagmire, along with the expressions that imply anxiety and fright at the brink of peril.
