Yet another thing I keep mentioning but have yet to explain (until now!): Magolor’s departure from Jambastion, and the effects thereof.

ACTION
So here’s Magolor in his traveling outfit~. At this point in his life he’s about 12-13 years old, finally leaving home to follow his dreams.
And he finds that the outside world is more than just the hedonistic hellscape his father always warned him about: it’s a living, breathing society, with problems that people still care about and are trying to solve.

Problems like…the Haltmann Works Co.’s destructive monopolization of all the world’s industries and resources. 9u9 To combat this, and satisfy his love for technology and engineering, he ends up joining a hacktivist collective.* Those people serve as his mentors until Void Termina appears (so, 5-ish years), and he strikes out on his own to build the Starcutter.

*Does this make working alongside Susie Haltmann kind of awkward? Yes~. Is Susie aware that he’s a former cybercriminal who dedicated most of his young adult life to taking her down? Probably. ^^ But since they have bigger fish to fry, they’ve each decided to pretend nothing happened and play nice…for now~

REACTION
While Mago is out achieving self-actualization, the father he left behind is both living and becoming a very dark, depressive nightmare.
Before he ran away from home, he did leave a note, explaining how he felt out of place and unable to live up to Hyness’ expectations. But honestly, that may have made things worse: probably the most devastating thing you can tell a parent that would literally kill and die for you is that you don’t even feel like you belong with them. Needless to say, Hyness took it very hard.

To fill this new gaping void in his life, he decides to throw himself into his work: collecting the Jamba Heart shards, performing sacrifices by the dozens, and preparing his followers for the Dark Lord’s return. And in a strange way, his deep sorrow actually makes him better at it.

If you’ve ever seen Legend of Korra: y’know how Zaheer can’t really gain the ability to fly until [spoiler] dies? I feel like Magolor’s leaving affected Hyness in a similar way.
Void Termina, and by extension the Jambastion Religion (at least the way I’ve written it here) is all about soulless destruction, right? About having empty hearts, devoid of love or care…it’s hard to achieve that when you have an adorable son to fawn over every day. It was only in losing him that he was able to attain the right frame of mind to call upon a god of nothingness and despair.

P.S. The cape-hands aren’t specifically related to this; I just needed to design them for a later comic…the final one, actually. ^^ You'll see~
