I've always been extremely curious, how exactly does one set about creating one of these, if you have a few minutes to explain

Sorry I took so long answering this. It takes three things to do these well. Good software for starters. Time and patience to fine tune it, the software is not perfect and you get some weird piece placement. Third and most important you need an extensive library of images and it really helps that they are the same size. My mosaics are made from over 30,000 images. Good luck!
