How do you get so much detail on a acrylic painting? I try all the time but I`m finding it really difficult. Do you have any suggestions on how to do it or any recommended books that will help me? I love this its really awesome.

Thank you.

OK, first of all, you must understand that I'm 58 years old, and I have been painting for many years to get this good. When I was getting my BFA back in the early 1970s, we were required to buy and use acrylic paints for one of my art classes, and I hated them, because they dried so fast, which made it hard to blend colors and get any smooth transitions, etc. I much preferred to use opaque watercolor, also known as gouache, or designers colors. And for many years that was the only medium I used for doing paintings.

Then, in 2004, I painted my first outdoor mural, and I was forced to use semi-gloss, exterior acrylic house paint. Well, by that time I had done so many paintings with opaque watercolors, that I had developed my own system of blending and glazing, and thereby knowing just how much water to add and mix for whatever effect that I needed. So I just applied that same system to working with the acrylic house paints, just on a much larger scale, and it worked just fine. And I have done several more murals, both on exterior walls and interior walls, as well as on large canvas banners, using nothing more than acrylic house paint. Now, for the two acrylic paintings that I posted in my gallery here, namely "Leviathan" [link] and "Peace in the Water" [link] , you must keep in mind that I did these very large. "Leviathan" measures 30 X 40 inches, and "Peace in the Water" is 36 X 48 inches (3 X 4 feet), although they were both done with regular artist quality acrylic paint, and not house paint, this time; but that is how I was able to get so much detail--I painted BIG. For the mailbox that you see here, I used cheap, hobby style/crafters acrylic paint, bought at Hobby Lobby, but they were developed specifically for outdoor use, so they will not fade too quickly in the sunlight (I hope).

So, my main suggestion is to first try to paint with a water-based medium that works for you, and that you like to use, and then practice, practice, practice with that medium until you get really good and know how to blend to get the effects and look that you like, and then apply what you learned from that to painting with acrylics.

Thank you. BTW, I posted this on my Facebook page, and now I've got people asking me to paint mail boxes for them. So I decided sure, why not, but I'll be charging them $100.00-$150.00 (US) per mail box, plus shipping.
