“There it is!”

The two riders galloped along the winding mountain pass to the small border marker indicating the lands of the Royal Kingdom. Throwing back their hooded cloaks, they glanced at each other smiling as they walked their mounts across the lonely unmanned crossing point. There had been no sign of pursuit for the last ten days of hard riding as Denna, the Royal Ranger, and her lover Princess Aetherea made their escape from the house of the evil Prince Eugene.

That evening Deena and Aetherea held hands beside a roaring fire as the sun set over the East Mountains. Earlier they had encountered a patrol of Royal Rangers who promised to cover their back trail in the unlikely event the guards of Prince Eugene would dare cross the Royal border.

Denna stared into the sunset reflected in Aetherea’s soft green eyes, “Tonight we can sleep soundly and without fear. The Rangers will guard us while we sleep.”

Aetherea smiled playfully and squeezed her beautiful companions hands, “Tonight Denna, and every night from now on you will share my blankets.”

Denna, who had only slept in snatches as she guarded her friend and guided the two of them on the hard journey to their home, returned her smile. “There is no place I would rather be, tonight, and every night from now on.”
