Description A quartz crystal set in an antelope horn. Overall length about 6-1/2 inches. Fill for the join is 1/50 inch diameter black glass microbeads. The crystal has a very unusual natural shape (to my eye it has an illusory spiraling look when seen in 3-D, though it is all flat planes at the standard quartz angles).

A wand is a type of intention tool, and so (sometimes) is a crystal (with or without a handle). Is this a wand, or a crystal with a handle?

I think it was only $100 or so. Now it would be more.

So beautiful...  How much are you asking for it DonSimpson?

This was sold long ago, and so were most of the items in my deviantART galleries. I had to make a special subgallery for the few unsold.

where do you buy your crystals?

DonSimpson In reply to S-2385 [2012-12-19 09:47:40 +0000 UTC]

This one (the only one I've ever found with this natural step-dislocation curve) is from a dealer at the two-day Crystal Fair held at Fort Mason, San Francisco, several times a year. I've also found crystals at the three-day Gem & Jewelry Show held in San Mateo, several times a year, and at bead shows, street fairs, garage sales, and flea markets. I keep an eye out for crystals that fit current projects or inspire new ones, but I seldom find ones I really like. It's fun looking, though.

Great ! very similar to the Yawara?

DonSimpson In reply to Hisp013 [2011-01-23 20:12:26 +0000 UTC]

I suppose, if you took a broad enough definition of "intention", that you could call a yawara an intention tool. However, my intention tools are not intended as weapons, and would probably be damaged by combat-level angular stresses.

This would be great for anyone who practices Wicca. I've been looking for a wand... but I don't think I have enough to buy this one. Very interesting though mate.

I usually have a box of inexpensive wands on my sales table at conventions and such.

The "bargain" wands generally go for $10.

Oh wow!!!
You are amazing!!!!
This is way better than the wand-like crystal thing I made back in high school (Renaissance faire inspired at the time)
How did you set the crystal in the horn? (granted I've only wrapped them in sinew thread)

Fantastic Job!!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonSimpson In reply to Zhon [2008-03-25 04:25:09 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I do regard this as one of the better results (there always being some things better and some worse than one's current usual output).

The horn is hollow, so the rough end of the crystal is fitted into the hollow and glued (I use cyanoacrylate), and the gaps are filled with a mix of glue and black glass microspheres, shaped to blend the forms together (though I had picked out a crystal specifically for how well it blended with and complemented the horn.).

VERY cool.

Where dis you get the microspheres? They look like they would be fun to play with.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonSimpson In reply to LadyBlacksword [2008-03-22 04:43:42 +0000 UTC]

I have a large and eclectic colection of things gathered over the decades from surplus stores, garage sales, discards by friends in high-tech industries, and so on. I don't recall where I got my little vial of itsy black spheres, but I suspect they were originally from some scientific or technical supply place.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyBlacksword In reply to DonSimpson [2008-03-22 10:33:31 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. Could you take a pic of the vial?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonSimpson In reply to LadyBlacksword [2008-03-22 16:21:50 +0000 UTC]

I probably could, but it's plain and has no labels. I have, or had, vials of red and blue ones, also. and clear ones of various larger sizes. Plus ordinary miceospheres of the sort that are mixed with paint to make reflective traffic markings.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyBlacksword In reply to DonSimpson [2008-03-23 03:08:57 +0000 UTC]

Wanted the pic to get a clearer idea of the spheres and what they look like unused. And the idea about paint additives is helpful.

DonSimpson In reply to LadyBlacksword [2008-03-23 18:59:28 +0000 UTC]

Well, some of the vials have labels, but at least some of the vials are not the original containers. Until my next scanning session, here is some information:
-----
Black glass roughly .02 inch, maybe on the low side. -- Origin unknown
-----
Red and blue glass roughly .03 inch -- From Berger Specialty Company, aka Berger Beads, in Los Angeles [link] (who may not stock them anymore)
-----
Clear glass roughly .03 inch -- From Carry-All Hobby and Craft Supplies (local store, long out of business)
-----
Clear glass marked as .08 and .11 inch -- Probably lab supply, as "glass microspheres" [link]

This is easily one of my favourite of your pieces. It's so smooth and simple, and it looks like it would be fun to hold.

I have a friend who goes to my local art college who's really into bone and antler carving ... she does these fantistic abstract sculptures mounting feathers and things on skulls and antlers with rusty discarded bolts and springs ... they look so weirdly "in-place" together, like nature combined with the discards of civilization or something. Anyway, I'm trying to encourage to put some stuff up on dev. I told her about your skull carvings and she got all excited ... so we'll see

DonSimpson In reply to Kenthayle [2008-03-15 03:00:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's very tactile, which is something I really like in my pieces.

Keep encouraging your friend.

The Dark Crystal is one of my favorite movies, and I have the books _World of the Dark Crystal_ and _Making of The Dark Crystal_. So if something I do reminds you of that film, it is probably not a coincidence....

how did you attach this? with some sort of glue?

DonSimpson In reply to Marcusstratus [2008-03-14 22:12:20 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Cyanoacrylate glue. In this case, with those black glass microspheres as a filler.

Marcusstratus In reply to DonSimpson [2008-03-14 22:15:33 +0000 UTC]

o.0 Interesting, haven't heard of that adhesive before.

By the by, I like how you've named it intention tool, instead of wand. Wand has a more... fantasy, special effect stigma to it...

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

DonSimpson In reply to Marcusstratus [2008-03-15 02:47:01 +0000 UTC]

Cyanoacrylate is sold in various formulations under lots of brand names, such as Krazy Glue, Super Glue, etc. I'm currently using one called Insta-Cure, which I got at the local hobby store; it comes in various setting speeds and viscosities.

"Intention tool" is, as you say, a more neutral (as well as more general) term for a class of objects I make. It doesn't presume a theory to go with the practice....

malkie13 In reply to Marcusstratus [2008-03-14 23:01:30 +0000 UTC]

Cyanoacrylate is what they dilute to make Krazy Glue (and it's ilk). You can get it industrially in all sorts of concentrations, etc.
