O'Keefe burst into his workshop with a clatter, lighting lamps and readying his tools with a speed born of necessity. The pudgy, crinkled looking doctor who had followed him up till now hung back in the doorway; clutching a small jug to his chest with the look of a man treading on forbidden ground. O'Keefe paid him no mind, turning his attention instead to his latest project. Rough calloused fingers caressed the smooth wood with surprising delicacy. Tracing patterns that would soon be laid down in blood and fire. Satisfied the pattern was properly fixed in his mind; he selected a fine fox hair brush from his collection, and motioned for the doctor to hand him the jug...

After Isaac had given over the jar of blood, he'd fled as fast as he could. But now, on the long dark walk back to town, his mind had caught up with him. He'd no idea how the old blood wizard had learned of the Riley family's son so quickly O'Keefe would pay handsomely for fresh blood, and if he survived the operation, little Connor was almost of an age for apprenticeship. But when Isaac had arrived at their house, O'Keefe was already there; and Isaac had found himself in the odd position of saving a boys life while his elder brother made sure every crimson drop spilt went into an earthenware jug instead of the floor.

Now that blood was being used to make a Golem. Golem's had always unsettled Isaac. He still remembered when they were only made by Rabbi's. When they were hated and feared as devils magic. Now they were everywhere, a status symbol, and though still feared, their creators were now respected as well. Still, how the Riley's thought their child was going to learn anything from a deaf man was beyond him.
