Description
A map of AlT!Hyrule. The devastation of the Mage War only a few years' prior left the isolated kingdom in a state of total disrepair, scattering most of its inhabitants throughout the now-dangerous wilds. Strange monsters-no, anomalies - called rifts appeared out of thin air, terrorizing the nigh-helpless people. But as time passed, Hyrule began to heal again, perhaps more quickly than it had ever before with the help of the True Mages and Princess Zelda. Twelve years later, roads have been rebuilt, villages and towns restored to their former states, but the ever present dread of rifts or evil magicians coming to destroy it all over again looms over everyone.--------
AlT!Hyrule is a mostly temperate country about the size of modern-day Italy. Its highest mountain range forms a long barrier against the cold winds of the northern and eastern edges of their floating nation (yes, it's a floating island), rolling into hills, flat plains and dense forests near its center. Various races live (mostly) peacefully in its 10 districts, from tiny creatures like fairies and pols to much more formidable species like gorons and lynels.
Hylia District
Hylia is a fairly well-sized district that serves as the capital of Hyrule. Many people from other districts come here to trade, catch up on news from around the country, and just witness the atmosphere of the town. As the largest surviving city after the Mage War it contains some beautiful architecture carefully preserved and protected by the True Mages, the most important servants of Princess Zelda. The town also has a severe rift problem, so it’s the ideal place to host a school for learning magic to combat these rifts.
Higher government positions are held by residents of Hylia, but this is more or less because Hylia is the capital and those with authority prefer to stay where the center of government is. Additionally, long-time Castle Town residents made first contact with the True Mages before the reconstruction of Hyrule, and since they’ve known the True Mages for longer, they’re considered trustworthy. Hylia isn’t quite as clique-ish as other districts-there’s an unusual amount of people who still have their complete family with them. This is hypothesized to have happened because Hylia was heavily guarded against the Mage War and only was attacked near its end. This hasn’t reduced the number of rifts, however. In fact, rifts here are often highly aggressive, attacking often and appearing on buildings and other things that they’re not commonly seen on.
To combat this and the chaos that came after the end of the war, the True Mages have opened magic schools where they teach students how to properly handle magic so that they don’t become infatuated with it and repeat the same mistakes from the Mage War. Castle Town is the only city with a running orphanage and homeless shelter. Orphans often join small gangs and beg so almost no one trusts them until they get pulled off the streets. Hylia also has a larger number of prisons than most other districts, but there’s about the same number of criminals as there are in others. These prisons are often more secure than the ones found in your average town so very dangerous persons are usually sent to one of these. The most secure dungeon in all of Hyrule is found right underneath Hyrule Castle, where it’s rumored that traitors, spies, and the most heinous criminals are kept hidden from the public’s view.
Viriko District
The largest district, and the one most populated by hylians. The rivers flowing through it and frequent overflow of rainfall from the mountains, milder climate, and general flat-ness make Viriko an ideal place for farming, so that’s what most do there. It’s fairly hot as well, and with the cold weather from further up, it also gets quite windy. In the aftermath of the Mage War, the True Mages realized that many people from Viriko had been displaced to other parts of the country, and so as soon as they had gathered the resources to guide them back they settled most of the people on communal farms scattered around the ruins of the many roads that go through the largest town, Kakariko. It’s considered the backbone of the entire country and its inhabitants are well-taken care of and closely guarded. Many friendly moblins also live here as well, though they're not as closely guarded. They instead tend to guard against and hunt down bandits and any stragglers who might've "accidentally" wandered off from their village, and sometimes help guard the border from the rather aggressive inhabitants of Kotome. Some pols and river zora live here as well, but pols tend to stick to larger towns, taking care of vermin where it's most needed instead of just random villages without much of a pest problem, while river zora tend to use the rivers around Viriko's borders to send messages to and from different districts or form fishing villages. Some goron settlements exist near the highlands, but these are negligible.
Alpenrall District
A large mountainous district that's often considered untrustworthy. When the True Mages came to help them initially from their rift problem, which was almost as bad as Hylia District's, most of the citizens agreed, but now they've begun to dabble in the smuggling of illegal magical objects. There's a multitude of crags and caves for bandits to hide here, but just as much opportunity for adventurers and miners to find riches- many ramshackle mining towns have popped up around the region. Other than that, many of Alpenrall's inhabitants herd goats and other animals to make warm woolen clothing and other products. Wizzrobes, being the shy creatures that they are, tend to stick around the high peaks and northernmost parts of alpenraal. Compared to other regions, they’re actually quite friendly with other races, and actually have close ties with hylian towns. Often when mages come to destroy rifts around the area, they’ll sometimes travel up to where the wizzrobes are so they can deal with the rifts there as well. If they see any bandits hanging around the peaks, then they’ll often try to capture or report them, but the occasional missing sheep or goat is often blamed on them. Far to the north, near the very edge of the world, there's rumored to be a large amount of wizzrobes guarding a mysterious temple filled with dangers.
Subrosians actually quite like it in this district, and there’s patches of them in most villages and towns. Usually avoiding trouble if they can, they’re usually found mining the rock around the area. Several of them have made friends with wizzrobes, who they can relate with.
Several lynels have claimed their territory around Alpenraal. Since they tend to choose isolated parts near the far northern peaks, they tend to butt heads with the wizzrobes of the area, leading to some pretty destructive fights. Lynels driven out of their territory by wizzrobes often go on rampages looking for new territory, so if other races know that a fight is brewing, then they’ll generally try and help them sort it out. Lynels are pretty comfortable in the area for the most part, and don’t go out of their way to attack anyone unless they’re vandalizing their territory, which they will keep and guard a bit like their own personal nature reserve. A few of them have made pacts with bandits, but they usually ask for hefty compensation.
Eldin District
The True Mages had their first encounters with gorons here, as well as a few less than pleasant encounters with the many fairies that live in the highlands. Although they tend to almost disappear in the harsher months, fairies around here cause immense mischief or blessing, depending on whether you get on their bad side or not. At one point they nearly destroyed an entire goron settlement by continually harassing it, forcing the True Mages to send in a several squads of soldiers and pols to try and deal with the problem. This only made the fairies angrier, though, and eventually the hylians and gorons were forced to cave into the fairies and their Great Fairy's demands. A good portion of the forested areas of Eldin cannot be entered by most races without great risk, although some bandits and unsavory people do occasionally try to enter. Wizzrobes seem to be the only sentient creatures up there besides fairies, though.
The hardworking gorons of Eldin, however, are carefully monitored by the Hylia District. They produce much of the country's stone and metal in large, well-organized mines and refineries. Skilled members of these mines often are implored to come to Castle Town so their products can be sold more easily. There's also been a few moblin and hylian towns popping up as new roads are made.
Kotome District
The southern mountain region is most well-known among hylians for being a lawless, terrifying place filled with unfriendly monsters and bounty hunters that would slit your throat for 20 rupees. Wizzrobes, subrosians, gorons, and lynels banded together quickly after the Mage War there, and when explorers did come to investigate this district they quickly realized they were unwelcome. Kotome has built up quite a civilization for itself, so much so that many speculate that it will try and gain independence from Hyrule at some point. However, the rumors don’t have much backing them up, and relations between Zelda and Kotome leaders have improved over time.
Gorons reign supreme in Kotome, and it really shows. They’re larger, stronger, and more magically adept compared to other gorons, probably because of the rich mineral content around the area (and the fact that they live around wizzrobes). Although not as common as some other races they’re pretty easy to find, usually stomping around and imposing their authority on everyone who dares insult them. Although many of them do mine for rocks and craft things a lot of them have begun to specialize in jobs not usually associated with gorons, like research, working with wood or leather, enchanting things, banking, writing, and punching the daylights out of people as bodyguards. If you get on their good side, though, they’re incredibly loyal and will do anything to protect you and your allies. Most feel a strong emotional connection to their weaker, “oppressed” brothers in other districts and try their best to assist them, despite the higher-ups in Hylia usually trying to prevent it.
Wizzrobes have also been a bit more sociable here than they usually are. Due to their varied magical types, many of them have gone to the magic school in the biggest town in Kotome and discovered many dangerous and mystical secrets. Many of them are teachers at the school, tutoring some now extremely dangerous mages. Others not as interested in magic are merchants, craftspeople, hunters, and other professions. Some have developed keese and other meat farms where they breed animals for food and other resources with the help of pols.
Although stereotyped as a small and timid race, subrosians are genuinely powerful here, although still shy. They have a higher chance of being adept at spirit magic than most other races, which makes them crucial to destroying rifts around the area. They weren’t hostile to hylians at first, but after they heard about how subrosians were being treated in other districts they quickly became bitter towards the pointy-eared humans.
Kattea District
This area was reckoned the “twin of Kotome” long ago because of its stubborn inhabitants. It’s home to some sizable Zora settlements as well as many original hylian settlements. Although the True Mages claim to respect the people who live there, due to some grudges from riots a few years ago they tend to neglect Kattea more than other districts. It’s a very densely forested region, and most people who live here participate in some kind of forestry or work with lumber that they send upstream through channels in Matas, the district across from them. Some particularly crazy people have tried to examine the fairly accessible edge of the world that they have, though their edge is surrounded by a suspended sea of water that's brimming with giant rift creatures. At the edge of the sea, there's a large area of swampland. A few river zora made a settlment in the boggy islands near Kattea's coast, but they were never heard of again.
Rutenen District
A district filled mostly with both lumber and textile mills run by moblins, hylians and subrosians. It's often the birthplace of many odd and newfangled ideas- probably having something to do with how cramped everyone in the area's brain is, with everyone in closely-packed, oddly tall villages clustering around the rivers. There's a tiny magic school here in one of the larger towns, but it has much less to do with the artistry they teach in Hylia and Kotome and more to do with practical matters, such as healing people and destroying rifts. If Viriko is the backbone of Hyrule, then Rutenen is most certainly its heart, as its close proximity to the other two productive Hylia- controlled districts allows goods to flow there to be processed and sent to the capital and other areas easily.
Matas District
A watery district that holds the capital of the River Zora and their Queen Litany. The inhabitants of this district are fairly secretive- some would even call them snobby- but they do allow Katteans and other districts to transport goods up the river as long as they don't cause trouble in any of the many zora and pol villages scattered about. However, the further east one goes in the district, the more dangerous things get for an unsusecting traveller. Bandits from the Midoro region will often sneak into Matas, destroying villages and stealing cargo.
Midoro District
Of all the districts, this is the most vile and lawless, though often the most mysterious as well. Hostile gangs of bandits and murderers lurk in the lightly wooded plains of this district, though it's rumored that there's a deep, dark, cursed forest somewhere inside its borders. Criminals from all over Hyrule run to this place so they can do as they please with no consequences. However, some brave souls have started building better roads here as well as a few ranches.
Dodoron District
A large district filled with mines, ranches and roads still in construction to connect them, as well as a few farms here and there. The only civilization you're going to find here is mostly along those roads, as well as along the rivers that are used to send things down to Rutenen.
Sorry about kinda conking out there at the end lol. I'll be adding more stuff to this hopefully as time goes on, as well as explaining some things about each race, so stay tuned I guess. xD
On the whole district note, can you guess where AlT!Link is from and where AlT!Ganon is?
