Description I think I have a problem. I've seen Speed Racer nearly 20 times, and I still love it. I think I have a bona fide obsession with this movie.

And now, I'm designing a t-180 racer a la Speed Racer.

I proved that the T-180 wheel base can really work!

I never doubted the suspension could work.

However, the drivetrain is a problem. Given that each tire can independently rotate on a central axis, the question becomes, "how is rotational force transferred from the engine to the wheels?". We can safely assume (for many reasons) that it's not a chain drive. I'm thinking that it's also not using any sort of axle system, as the number of necessary junctures would compromise the engines' work output and seriously over-complicate the mechanical aspects of the suspension system.Β

The only way that I can figure it would be done is with high-speed electric motors mounted inside of the tires.

You and I share the same theory on the wheels, and the Supercharged trailer(?) shows Racer X's car with centerless/hubless wheels. While such a wheel would probably be electric, Supercharged pretty much immediately contradicts itself and says it has a proper combustion engine to power the wheels (and then contradicts itself AGAIN, saying it has some sort of fuel cell... thing), and shows something resembling an axel coming out of the engine and attaching to the wheels.

That is exactly my theory on the wheels! But the cg models shown in the movie show a fixed axle that can stretch some how, and my theory on that would be that the axle may be some kind of telescoping arm.

Stretch? Actually, according to the Speed Racer Wikia, only the original Mach 5 had a conventional trans-axle wheelbase. Something that would've disqualified it from being used in the GRX, as that is strictly a T-180 race. They never explained that in the movie, but I guess that's why they had to build the Mach 6. And, it makes more sense that you never see the Mach 5 being put through easy 360 spins at any point before the final race.

Great design! I like the T-180 race cars from the movie but my favourite car from Speed Racer is the Mach 5! I like how the designers have made it echo the old one from the cartoon but still manage to look modern.

Thank god, another person I know who loves this movie. Everyone I know hates it for some reason (and it didn't exactly get favourable reviews).

I really like this, you seem to have copied it well, and the reflections are awesome.

Can you believe that one of the reviews for Speed Racer actually said "there were too many racing scenes..."?

And as far as the car goes, I was trying to make something original. I guess I made a mistake in adding that curved spoiler. And, I suppose the forked front end does make it look similar to the Mach 5.

I don't know, when I first saw it I just thought it was a futuristic car, when you mentioned Speed racer I immediately thought it looked like the Mach 5.

And the movie(how is 'movie' not in firefox's dictionary?... and neither's 'firefox' really split audiences, people either loved it with growing adoration, or they hated it with a fiery fury. I'm not ashamed to say I'm in the former, I loved it, especially the ending where they bombarded you with nauseating strobing lights and packed you full of cheesy emotion... that's the crap I go to the movies for.

Really, if you've only seen the movie once, you're probably not going to like the movie for the fact that there's just too much movement on the screen during the races. Luckily I managed to find a really good bootleg (I also bought the movie when it came out last Tuesday) of the movie and managed to become aware of the ridiculous amount of detail all throughout.

I'd still like to throttle Spritle(sp?)every time he directly disobeys Pops or sneaks into the trunk of the Mach 5.

Why does a racecar have a trunk?

Yeah, I saw it at the cinema first time round (it's not out on DVD here yet, but since it is in the states I already "have it") so I managed to see all the detail.

And yeah, Spritle was just annoying.
