[Canon] - Firefly was the name that Hasbro was originally going to give Rainbow Dash. Some references have been made to the possibility of another character named Firefly.

[Fanon] - Firefly has been re-imagined as a character from the fanfic "It's a Dangerous Business, Going out Your Door".

She was the pony who helped young Rainbow Dash overcome a physical disability and who taught Dash to fly. She was Rainbow Dash's greatest role model. Firefly could control lightning completely, an ability unique among pegasi, and unlike other pegasi, was sensitive to cold temperatures.
She ended up giving her life to save Cloudsdale from a deadly winter storm that would have caused the city's cloud foundations to disintegrate.

For years afterward, Rainbow Dash tried to figure out how Firefly commanded lightning, but failed - until the events of Dangerous Business.
