I remember experiencing said "mental trauma" as I kid when I found out that Quasimodo and Esmeralda didn't survive (not to mention the real Pocahontas dying of small pox at the age of 21). But I got over it. I just judge the movies as they are and enjoy them.

And it's not just the endings they changed. They also altered certain story events and characters... oftentimes for the better in my opinion.
