Description
Long live America and God bless those who truly sacrifice to make this great nation what it is.'Tis a World War 1 soldier from the cover of a magazine. I couldn't find his name or whether he got to return home or not. If anybody recognizes him from the original photo I'd love to know.
A new (and rather terrifying!) technique for me! I didn't spray enough fixative on the pencils so they got all smeary when I put the oil wash on top.
***********
And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property.
I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company.
We're thankful for those thankful for the things we've done.
We can rest in peace;
'Cause we are the chosen ones:
We made it to Arlington.
Yeah, dust to dust,
Don't cry for us:
We made it to Arlington.
-Trace Adkins, "Arlington"
**************
Thanks for making me all emotional, !

I can't believe that a teacher would do something like that to your works, but I have heard similar horror stories before. Even ones with the teacher actually drawing all over the piece, and ruining all the hard work that they had done!
I think you honored this soldier well by rendering such a marvelous piece of artwork! Bravo!

How poeticly beautiful, I believe you captured the emotion in the eyes of the soldier perfectly.

Ah, watch out for those eraser-raping teachers!!!! >3
I really love this work, I couldn't see that you didn't photoshop it until I read your comment.
Huh, I didn't know Trace Adkins had a song about Arlington... I guess I should, since I live there >3
Anyway, thank you for supporting the troops... not enough people do that around the art community.

I love this, it has so much emotion and so much feeling. Not only have you captured the look in his eyes but the smeared oil wash really gives it the feel of some picture from two generations ago. You have amazing graphite talent.

Thanks for the kind words. Graphite is the only medium I know well enough to really connect with.

*___* Oh man this is awesome. It looks like it was engraved into wood or something. I was like, wait, that's just paint on top? And to say nothing of the drawing itself... gaah you're soooo talented Dooz!

It's oil paint thinned out with another oil, I think. Linseed maybe? I'm kind of art-retarded.
Either way it stunk HORRIBLY.

And now I have to go listen to that song again....

The Soldier
"It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the soldier,
who salutes the flag,
who serves under the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag."
By Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC
Many thanks to our veterans. And this is an amazing piece - the eyes are haunting and strong, and the smears make it look like you're looking at him across smoke-filled air.

Those who live by a flag should die for one.
It's a round world and we're all the same last time I checked.

That poem is SO TRUE. Anti-war demonstrations always reek of irony to me because the freedom of protest is protected by soldiers.
I guess the smears were kind of a happy mistake.

true fax. I think anti-war demonstrations are necessary, but i draw the line at flag-burning (unless you're not an American. That's all right). it's very irresponsible and rather tacky.

From the movie 'The American President':
"You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Now show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then you can stand up and sing about the 'land of the free'".

And yet, it's funniest when the flag burner manages to light himself on fire at the same time. I still flag-burning is tacky.

It's weird, cause when you do the pencil drawing by itself it doesn't look realistic at all. You're supposed to draw in only the darkest darks AND I HATED DOING IT. I kinda didn't follow directions.
