Description
I just wanted to play with an idea I had for shapes of the head, teeth, and the idea of 3 eyes on each side. This concept is my idea of keeping Ghidorah looking updated, yet true to his Showa form, and his otherworldly origin. I have other ideas for the body as well, and different silhouette's for alternate origin ideas. There's no telling what Edwards, Legendary, and Toho all come up with for these guys in the upcoming films, so having different looks is fun to explore right now.ΒView a 3D realtime turnaround of this model HERE on sketchfab .

Ghidorah with 18 eyes? that's actually pretty scary, I can imagine all eyes looking directly at me.

i love it, it's a pretty alien take on the Space Dragon itself!, i like the six eyes on each head of Ghidorah, in total 18 eyes!, it feels like a cosmic horror.

Awesome! The 3 sets of eyes nicely continues the theme of 3 heads.

Very creepy. The scales look great, and so does the hair. And I like the fact that you kept the crescent moon horn on him. Just doesn't feel like KG without it I swear.
The eyes are a mixed bag for me. While I think it is really cool and makes for an awesome picture...it just doesn't seem like something that would work that well in film. And to me, that all boils down to "direct focus". What I mean by this, is when you have eyes like this...they are always depicted as staring off to the sides of the monster. They don't seem to focus on the other fighter. A good example of this, is the monsters that were in the first Hellboy movie. The looked amazing. But when you got up close to the face...you sort of get this feeling that the monster is not all that smart. The eyes are not conveying emotion and malic to their opponent. They are sort of bobbing and looking around the area around them. They don't convey wisdom.
When I think of KG, I think of a creature that is the embodiment of chaos. A thing that is equally as intelligent as it is evil. In Mothra 3, when you zoomed in on it's face...you felt that monster's wrath. The eyes were blood red and focused on their target. They looked beyond evil. When I see this, I sort of see a creature that looks completely alienating and wary of it's surroundings.
I don't know, maybe I am over thinking things too much like I tend to do. But eyes are funny like that. We humans tend to focus on eyes so much...because they are one of the key features that we use to identify people with. Eyes can tell a design, or make it flop. I see it so many times on Face/Off. You can have an awesome looking creature..but if those eyes are not conveying an actual feeling...then the project seems to falter.
Anyway, it is a fantastic design. Do not get me wrong. I am glad you were thinking out of the box and did such a great piece of artwork. This is just something though I wouldn't want to see in film. On paper...it looks great. Hell, in a comic or manga, it would be perfect. But on film, I think it would distract more than it would engage the viewer.

That would be quite spiffy to see a Ghidorah with three eyes on each side. Definitely calls in the otherworldly vibe from it!

I feel like you've nailed a look that stands exactly between Showa and Heisei, which is ideal in my book. Giving each head 6 eyes is a really nice idea and youve implemented it seamlessly, great job.

Thanks man. It was just an idea I wanted to see realized. I'm not even sure I'm sold on the idea myself. but it's kinda cool. I happened onto a FB page that was hosting this image, and the comments were 50/50, but the negative comments about the eyes and hair were pretty funny. Seems like some die hard fans of Ghidorah don't even know what they're fans OF, or what their favorite monster used to look like in it's original form. (people saying Ghidorah would never have hair) But fans are fans of what they love for a reason, and once anyone tampers with it, tempers can flare. I'm guilty of it myself. : ) glad you like!Β

You've given Ghidorah a very alien look, almost like an extraterrestrial trying to ape and mimic what it conceives of what a 'dragon' or 'monster' looks like and getting it just a bit off and wrong.Β

Yeah, fan bases are definitely like that. If it's not status quo, it's horrible to some folk.
Take BlackMatter234's Rodan redesign, for example. When posted on the Facebook Godzilla page, people either hated it or loved it. Β blackmatter234.deviantart.com/β¦
People are fickle, but I'm glad you're doing what you want to do.

Ah yes, Blackmatter's work. I can't say I hated it. I love his work. and I appreciate the effort it takes, and the thinking involved in a redesign, regardless of the outcome. I feel the head shape was a bit too geometric, but I'll be damned if it doesn't look awesome in it's own right. I'm a big fan of his.Β

I can't say I feel the same way. I like the reptilian monsters more. but I am absolutely glad to see them all come back in this new movie. And I'm very eager to see how they design all of them. And I don't doubt Mothra is going to look amazing.Β

Yeah, while I do enjoy reptilian-like monsters, and I really do, I have lots of love for all types of monsters.
Its just that as a child and a teen, I grew fond of bugs and reptiles as I've read up on many different dinosaurs from the past,
of which some of the Kaiju depict. In all shapes and sizes, I love them all!
