Description Rhiahn © Marvel. zBrush.

This guy is from the Marvel Comics Godzilla series from the late 70's. In one particular battle, there were 3 Monsters sent to destroy Godzilla. Of the 3, I only liked this one. But he didn't seem like a monster that would fight Godzilla to me, he seemed more like a monster that would fight Gamera. He was more like one of Daiei's wacky suits rather than Toho's. There was something about him that seemed cooler than the others though and I always liked him.
Although it's not apparent in my artwork, I've made some changes to his abilities.  I see my version of this creature being able to close his eye and move it anywhere along the perimeter of his giant circular head and open it there. It usually remains front and center, but doesn't have to. it could even travel upwards to the center of his top jaw if his stance requires it. And the bottom one too, if he's flying above but wants to watch carefully below. The 3 appendages in the rear are really thin and are used for walking, but they can also vibrate at a precise speed and frequency that allows it to lift off the ground and fly with an antigravity like grace. While appearing feeble and fragile, those appendages vibrate with such force that nothing can damage them while doing so. And they have a sort of ability to know if and when they are in danger of being harmed and vibrate before it happens, making Rhiahn a lot more difficult to defeat than he might look. In the comic, those appendages inexpicably spun in the air like helicopter blades, allowing for flight. This always seemed to bother me for some reason. It was quite silly, and anatomically impossible. But it was part of his interesting silhouette, and needed to stay that way. So, I made them vibrate rather than spin. It's still as impossible, but maybe a touch less silly.

I was just scrolling through several random kaiju pics, when I noticed the thumbnail for this and gasped. "Oh! Rhiahn from the Mega Monsters!"
Sure enough, that's what it was. The Mega Monsters issues were some of my favorite in the entire Marvel Godzilla series; as others have said, they felt closest to the real G films. (As a child, I drew many pictures of the Salt Lake City battle for several weeks after reading the issues. Years later when actually visiting Salt Lake City, I recalled certain scenes of Godzilla, Red Ronin and the Mega Monsters as I looked at the various buildings there. Yes, I'm that big of a dork...)

VERY COOL update of an interesting design. I'm going to get lost in your gallery when I have time...

Oooh, hey, is that GORGO?! (clicks on another thumbnail...)

That's an interesting looking monster. The jaws and the leaf-like back legs make him look like walking venus flytrap.

While he as not my favorite of the Mega Monsters, you did a damn fine job on him. You really took advantage of this being such an old and simplified comic book character. Got to make up a lot of interesting shapes and textures to the monster that were impossible to put into comics back then.

Triax. I just thought it was a more well design beast. I liked the Rhino like body (sort of reminds me of Tundro from the Herculoids). And the eye stocks and the jet pack feet are just really cool. He is just the most "sound" design of the trio.

I see. I guess I found him too dirivitive, and liked the originality and craziness of Rhiahn more. But he's grown on me since. Probably would look great as a sculpt.

Ah, the Mega-Monsters. Rhiahn probably was the best, but I like to think the other two had some potential

Old Godzilla stories and marvel in the 70'ties had great imagination but they never had quality art like this! Awesome picture!

This is looking very awesome, and I do agree, he feels like a Gamera monster than something that fought Godzilla.

Showa Daiei seemed to go the more bizarre routes, at the risk of believability. But it always equalled entertainment!

Nice to see this guy getting a little attention, although to be honest, my favorite thing about him in the Marvel comic? Godzilla performed his best kill in the series on him! And after taking out his two partners as well!!!

This revamp of the design is very well done, adding details that give the creature more dimension than they were able to achieve in the seventies.

Thank You for Reading.

I agree. While I didn't really like the fact he had helicopter blades to fly, Godzilla using them to sever Rhiahn's own head was pretty great.

Yeah...

And to me (Not to nitpick or complain about the Marvel comic) that moment out of the entire series was the truest to Godzilla's character.

Thank You for Replying.

Issue #13!!!! I LOVED this guy....................Easily one of the best creatures and the most compelling cover of the entire run. Although Batragon from issue #4 was a strong second on both counts. I'm just amazed you took the time to do a piece of fan art/sculpture based on him....... We gotta send this to Herb Trimpe! Well done man, you made this ole Marvel Godzilla reader very happy tonight.
