Description
Vista Style Shell Replacement for XPSP2 AND SP3.Always back up system files before replacing.
Credit for this shell goes largely to others, including, but not limited to KampongBoy, Picassa243, Desktop Squared and fediaFedia. If you see something of your creation, please let me know at once, and I'll credit your contribution.
What I have tried to do is limit the size of Shell32 to 16 MB without sacrificing realism. This allows for faster and more stable load-up and avoids the RAM over-run notice Windows exhibits with larger Shell32 replacements.
There are two options; The traditional single folder icon shell (shown in the screenshot) and a shell with a fatter (double) folder, (the only other file in my Gallery, just now). Both are included in the download. Your choice. Either will work with SP2 OR SP3.
Directions: Using the enclosed Replacer utility, put files msgina.dll and shell32.dll into your System32 directory and restart your PC. If some icons appear not to have changed on rebooting, consider downloading TweakUI, a small utility from Microsoft (free) or another icon cache cleaner utility.
I have run this shell on XP Service Packs 2 and 3 successfully for about 5 weeks now without incident.
Happy Modding!
(PS: This shell is perfectly compatable with Jeremyddual's Vista Perfected Mods Pack XP-just released on deviantart)

The files still say In Resource hacker in the string table SP2. And i don't believe you have used it for five weeks without incident. Windows XP or Microsoft keeps changing the shell32 every time a critical patch is needed. This is a waste of time for eye candy.

You're right, Dakers. I haven't used it for five weeks without incident. I've used it for two and a half years without incident. If the disable Windows Rollback utility mentioned in the threads doesn't work for you, then disable automatic updates and manually update when you have time to re-patch the shell32 dll. May I ask, since you apparently have a valid copy of Windows XP, why you're still running SP2 and haven't upgraded to SP3?

I am running Windows XP with Service Pack 3, and it is a valid copy. I don't use any of that pirated stuff. I have found that just changing a lot of the bitmaps and icons with Resource hacker or some similar utility works a whole lot better. It may take more time, but i have found that stability in Windows XP is compromised by replacing the whole shell32 or msgina dill or whatever file it is. Whatever works for you is your decision to make.

Sorry, Dakers. I thought you were talking about my Windows 7 Pack, lol!. THIS deviation is 3 and a half years old! I'm not sure why anyone would be bothering with it at this point, except for icon resources or whatever.
You're right. You could prolly do a better shell32 on your own at this point.

My God! I didn't think anybody even visited this page anymore. It's like a year-and-a-half old!
Thank you very much for your kind comment, though, Jessica.

I've amended the license, D-Squared. I thought I WAS doing the right thing, lol! Thanks for the heads-up and I apologize for any inconvenience that may arise from the Creative Commons whattzit.
And yes, I understand thoroughly.

Looks nice, but it isn't polite to use resources from other people and release them under a Creative Commons license. I know you didn't have any bad intentions behind it, but there are many out here on dA who do... So the best way is to take permissions, and let others take permissions.
Plz remove the license... you would save us a lot of work of having to go about telling people to give us credits... I hope you understand...

I'm delighted to hear that, kaz! I was hoping some folks would try it in other languages than English and let me know. I've been asked to make a German version, so apparently it isn't universally compatable.
Thanks for trying it.

Thanx, BBB! In truth, most of it is work begun by others. All I've done, or tried to do is keep the dll small enuff to run smoothly on XP.
