Gaddafi was a great man when he was young. He stood for African dignity and made good use of the oil reserve in Libya, turning it into the richest country in Africa. But as it happened to all Arab dictators, his reign deteriorated as he grew old.
He used anti-colonialism to justify his brutality. He expelled thousands of people of Jewish and Italian descent from Libya.
He declared himself the King of Africa and exerted so much influence on his neighbours. Eventually, they had to man up and stop him from literally controlling them.
He waged wars against Egypt and Chad. He also supported Iran in the war against Iraq and fundamental Islamists in the Algerian Civil War.
His pan-Africanism clashed with his counterparts in the Arab world. He constantly berated other leaders at the Arab League.
He financed terrorism and ordered the killing of Libyan defectors in Mecca.
He sexually abused men and women. This is haram in Islam.
He marginalised his people, turning them against each other. He kept his power by making the whole system dependent on him. Lybia was a time bomb - had Gaddafi died of natural cause, the civil war would still have happened.
So all in all, his story is that of a hero falling from grace. His death was to be predicted and his legacy would be a very rotten one.
