Daniel was born into a middle class family in 1814 in London, England. He has two siblings, an older brother Peter (by 4 years), who works in law, and a younger half-sister Ariel (by 12 years). Daniel is engaged to Rebecca and plans to marry her while keeping them comfortable with his hopeful future job as a writer in "Gothic" literature. However, Rebecca doesn't find that his writings will do so, and the two often get into arguments-- especially after her father passed away and Daniel refused to attend the burial, as he had writing to do. To Daniel, his writings are most important, and he locks himself in his study for hours on end (even for days) to simply write. Due to this, he begins to suffer from insomnia.

Daniel also suffers from tuberculosis, in which he has been prescribed laudanum in an attempt to heal him (and help him deal with his insomnia). While it eases the suffering, Daniel becomes addicted to it, and it ultimately leads him to hallucinations, and finally a drug induced coma. It is when he enters this coma that Daniel finds himself trapped within his hallucinations, and ends up living the Gothic horror story he had been writing. No longer are his stories fantasy, but his reality. Stalked and hunted by them, Daniel tried to fight his way out of his dreams in order to reawaken to reality. But Adrian, the master of the darkness, and his fearful shadow lions are out to make sure he never returns. Only when Daniel is sucked into his fantasies does he begin to realize how much Rebecca meant to him and that perhaps there was more to life than just his stories.

It's his fight and choice to decide whether to stay within his fiction where he remains prisoner, but at peace and no longer ill; or return to his old life where Rebecca awaits along with the reality that life doesn't last forever.
