Description

I completed a 30-day Disney challenge on Tumblr and challenged myself by answering the prompts with speedpaints. I've been cleaning up my favorite speedpaints and turning them into finished pieces for display here, but you can click the link above to see what the quickies originally looked like.

This one is for prompt 8: favorite villain. Much to the surprise of no one, I drew Jafar from Aladdin, with his deliciously terrifying genie form pictured above. Jafar has been my favorite Disney villain since I was a kid, so it's made me extremely delighted to see he's been given two recent revivals in TWISTED and OUAT in Wonderland.

So why Jaffy Taffy? He's a great villain with many faces-- cool and cunning, classy and upright, and occasionally hot-tempered. Through his rise to ultimate power, we see that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Not only do we see his calm demeanor slip during his pursuit to obtain Aladdin's lamp, but when he ultimately becomes Genie's master and gains more and more power, his true nature is unveiled, and his hunger for power ultimately costs him his freedom. But as we've learned from the first sequel, a TV crossover, and the Kingdom Hearts games, Jafar is highly persistent and can't be taken down for good. I am totally in love with Jafar's voice as well. Jonathan Freeman is an incredibly talented actor and the only one who can pull him off.

Case and point, Jafar is the perfect villain, one that automatically comes to mind when someone mentions the Disney villains, which is why he has remained my favorite for years.

If you think about it, for Jafar to be instantly recognizable and remembered whilst being featured in the same film that stared Robin Williams is a pretty damn impressive achievement! Everyone remembered Genie but fr Jafar to be remembered and not overshadowed is amazing! So the creators and the voice actor definitely did something right with him lol.

I love the dark red theme happening here! That was his colour scheme hands down!

The genie version of him in the background looks super bad ass, he just couldn't wait to get crackin with his new powers. Too bad that doesn't last too long for him lol.

And of course we have the main man of the hour right at the front in all his glory! I love the work on his staff! I reckon it would have been nice to have a little bit of a background mention as to where he got that staff from. I guess we can only assume that he follows and believes in supernatural rumors and stories and that's what lead him to it, just like it did with the Genies lamp.

Great work on Jafar!!! You totally captured his evil and sleek presence without a doubt! <3333333

AAAAH THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

<--JAFAR IS SUCH A CREEPER!!!  I CANT FIND ANY PEDOBEAR BODIES TO ADD TO IT DDDD:

LOL you are so correct-- Genie was the most recognizable character and the most marketed (despite the whole fiasco with Robin Williams not wanting Genie to be the most prominent character in advertisements), but Jafar is still considered an iconic Disney villain!

His genie form kinda scared me as a kid, not going to lie XDDDD But in a very good way!

So your comment about the snake staff actually brought a potential answer to mind. There's a show up here called Once Upon a Time that borrows Disney characters (like the evil queen, Captain Hook, etc) and makes them more "human." It's kind of like a huge live-action crossover, if that makes sense. There's a spinoff of that show called Once Upon a Time in Wonderland that's basically nothing but Alice and Aladdin characters... and guess who the villain is! Only this Jafar is this really hot younger guy with hair XDDD But anyway, there's a whole episode about how he got his staff and it really makes him look like a truly evil son-of-a.... XD

<--AND OUR ALADDIN CRACK COMES TO MIND XDDDDDD

SULTAN PROBABLY TRIED TO TAKE PHOTO'S OF JASMINE BUT SHE WAS MOPING IN HER ROOM ALL ''OMG DADDY DON'T YOU SEE HOW DEPRESSED I AM BECAUSE YOU'RE MAKING ME MARRY A PRINCE I DON'T WANT TO!!!!!!'' SO SULTAN HAD TO TAKE PHOTOS OF JAFAR AND IAGO INSTEAD. HE WOULD HAVE DONE A SELFIE OR TWO AS WELL LOL.

J:

Thanks so much for the critique! I truly appreciate it when people are honest about glaring mistakes. As nice as compliments are, critiques set the stage for improvement!

LOL I didn't notice the shoulders, but yes, they do look a little awkward, especially when those billowy sleeves and pointy vest make them look even larger than life. Jafar has very weird anatomy in general which makes him a bit tricky to translate into a semi-realism painting. I'll keep that in mind for next time.

And I should have been more clear in the description-- this was definitely not a speedpaint, but rather the cleaned-up version of one I did for my Tumblr. This version took nine hours, which is definitely not speedy in my book. XDDD I'll change the artist's comment so it's less misleading. Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

Thank you so much again for the awesome comment!

Oh I'm sorry.  I thought it was a speed paint and was well damn if it looks this good as a speed paint...

Nine hours no... not speedy, but well worth the effort.  I like it.

Jafar is my favorite Disney villain too! I mean, I've been in love with him for a villain ever since I first saw him on screen as a kid. He's definitely a wicked guy, and I think you pulled him off (and his genie version) perfectly!
Oddly enough, my younger brother today informed me that he had a song pulled from the movie, so it never hit the screens. I guess he watched it on Youtube through story boards, and the song is about humiliating Aladdin. I'm definitely going to check that out tomorrow when I don't have to worry about school.
And I totally agree with you: Jonathan Freeman is the only guy who can pull off Jafar. ^^
... kind of surprised Iago isn't with him, lol. XD

dotsweare In reply to Mysterio-san [2013-12-06 04:27:43 +0000 UTC]

That's so awesome! Jafar was definitely a classic villain so it's no surprise they've repeatedly brought him back for the Kingdom Hearts games and all the crossovers and spinoffs Disney has produced.

Actually, he had TWO songs! "Humiliate the Boy" and "Why Me"! "Why Me" is quite a fun song-- the lyrics actually incorporate verses from Hamlet if I remember correctly, and there is quite a bit of humor in the visuals. It also gave a glimpse of Jafar's past. That is something I'd have definitely loved to see in Aladdin, or even the sequel. You should see both of them!!!

If you've ever seen Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Naveen Andrews pulls Jafar off extremely well. He's unbelievably gorgeous and steals the show every time he appears on screen. It's a different take, though, but it's very interesting!

Oh, crap! I should have included Iago! Maybe he's off getting revenge on Sultan for all of the crackers he's been fed over the years.

Speaking of school, how is it going for you? It sounds like your externships are right around the corner. Speaking from experience, they can be quite intimidating at first, but once you've settled into the groove of things, it becomes much more natural. Good luck, and I'm keeping your fingers crossed that you and your clinical instructor have personalities that "click".

I know, right? I think right behind him though would have to be Hades. XD

OMG! There were two songs?! I'll definitely have to check out the other when I get on Youtube. It actually would of been nice if they used songs like that in the movie, AND to see what Joker's past was like. That would of been interesting to see.

Ah. I've watched some of Once Upon a Time, but I've lost interest in the show rather quickly. I liked the first season, but then after that, the show started to be all over the place with its stories/characters. Unfortunately, I've never been a fan of the Alice in Wonderland series, so I never gave the show a chance, even after hearing Jafar was going to be the main villain in it. I have weird taste in shows.
I've heard things about Naveen Andrews as Jafar, but I just can't bring myself to be interested in the show.

School is alright. I wish my classmates had more personality besides sounding as traditional as life can get, but otherwise it's been alright, and my grades are still at the top. Right now I just want to know where my externship is going to be. I know I'm going to be a little nervous, but I'm not scared. The only thing that scares me about the externship is the weather. I really don't want to drive there in blizzards.

dotsweare In reply to Mysterio-san [2013-12-10 21:32:49 +0000 UTC]

Hades is definitely my second-favorite, or at least in the top three. K and I are both in agreement that he's trapped in a job he hates, the other gods poke fun at him, and his subordinates aren't the brightest bulbs in the box. I'd be pissed off, too, if I were in Hades's shoes.

Have you ever seen the Hercules TV series? Apparently there is a crossover with Aladdin in which Hades and Jafar team up to destroy both protagonists. It's probably on YouTube somewhere.

LOL I've always found Alice to be somewhat overrated-- it's a good story, but it doesn't warrant this complete obsession that people seem to have across dA, tumblr, and so forth. Naveen/Jafar is the only reason why I've watched it, but since it's scheduled during my kickboxing class it's difficult to watch hahaha.

I can relate to you on the blizzards! Driving through a blizzard at dark o'clock is consistently the worst part of working in our region of the country. At least your schedule may be consistent-- I'm predicting it may be something along the lines of 8 to 4 or 8 to 5. Your externship should also be close, especially if your class is small and/or your area has a lot of clinics. Keeping my fingers crossed that you get a good one!

I always love it when I see Hades pissed off. Interesting fact though: the man that voices Hades, James Woods, absolutely loves doing Hades and will always be glad to do him whenever the opportunity arrives. It's always great to hear actors that enjoy doing voice-work like that.

Oh! I have seen that episode! It has to be the best cross-over Disney thing they did! I love Hades' interactions with Jafar, especially his comment when he sees Jafar's "beggar disguise" of his. I bust a gut on that one. XD
You really should see the episode when you get the chance. I watched it some years ago on YouTube, but hopefully you can find it as well. It's definitely worth a watch.

I totally agree with you there. Alice in Wonderland is overrated, and...I haven't really found TV shows/movies of Alice that I really like. I remember this old Disney show I used to watch as a kid: "Adventures in Wonderland" I think it's called? ...I remember liking that when it was on, lol.
Maybe I can find some clips of Naveen's Jafar on YouTube. Like I said, I really don't care for the whole Wonderland-thing, and I'm already starting to fall out with the 'Once Upon a Time' show, so...yeah... I wouldn't mind seeing Naveen/Jafar in action, but like I said, probably just clips.

I'm assuming my schedule will be something like that. Right now I'm starting to get worried because I haven't heard back yet about where I'm going for my externship, and it's driving me crazy. I'm definitely going to talk to the people responsible for this sometime next week, because I should of heard back by now...about something-- they said to expect a call/email from them, but so far nothing.

Awh, thank you so much! I hope I get a good one too! ...one that's close, and where the people are friendly/patient with me, lol.

The painting is mind-blowingly awesome. The flaming staff, the fire in Jafar's hands/claws, I love the shadows on his Genie form, exquisite. ^^ I love the soft texture you give to his sleeves, well done, and his subtle smirk---and you summed up everything to love about Jafar. In addition, I love that he's done and experienced so much in both Canon, canon, and spinoffs--to me he's the epitome of a traveller character, but without the imposed wisdom that makes such characters unrelatable.

Oh my gosh, thank you for such an awesome and insightful comment!

You're absolutely correct! Jafar comes off as someone who has a fair amount of traveling under his belt, especially with the subtle hints presented in the first Aladdin movie. Not just literal traveling, of course, but like you said-- life experience. It's a shame he was so nearsighted in only viewing life as a quest to obtain power, rather than using his knowledge for the benefit of others.

Also, your gallery is absolutely glorious. I adore your interpretations of Jafar and Hades, as well as the many scenarios you've crafted for them. You clearly put a lot of thought and effort into your work!

My pleasure. ^^ And I forgot to mention, I'm thrilled that you quoted Return of Jafar in the title of this painting. The Jafar parts were to me, rather than goofy, indicates just how powerful he's become--so powerful that he invites the Genie to attack him. : )

Exactly, the "try me" says it all, regarding the traveling. : D It is a shame that he only sees life as a quest to obtain power, and on the other hand if he were wise and benefited others with his knowledge he wouldn't nearly have as much bite. The selfish characters are often the most compelling ones.

Thank you so much, as is yours, and I'm looking forward to perusing your gallery further. ^^ I'm glad you like my interpretations of Jafar and Hades, though some are a little unorthodox ^^:, Thank you so much! ^^

J:

LOL I'm glad someone else likes The Returh of Jafar as I thought I was the only one who enjoyed it! I have to say, as a child, I felt Jafar was even more intimidating, especially when he assumed his genie form, in that movie. Probably because he was so powerful, and thus much more dangerous.

To me it wasn't only the "Try me" line that clued me in, but also the decor in one of his chambers indicates he's probably been to east Asia or at least became familiar with its imports (I'm pretty certain I saw what looked like Chinese lanterns hanging on the walls, but I may have just been seeing things) and the fact that he's probably old enough to have seen and experienced most of the hardships life has to offer. So, yes, Jafar is definitely a well-seasoned traveler, both literally and metaphorically!

Thank you so much! LOL I don't think any of your stuff is unorthodox. Some of it is rather thought-provoking (in the best possible way), and I especially like your personal interpretations of Twisted, having very recently seen the musical.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

XbinaryBrwnfanartist In reply to dotsweare [2013-12-10 03:52:54 +0000 UTC]

Jafar was nearly unstoppable in The Return of Jafar.  : D And much more dangerous, I agree. The only downside to him being so powerful, or at least towards the end of the movie, was that he wasn't as playful, becoming more of the traditional, no-nonsense villain. It also forced a traditional villain-minion relationship between Jafar and Iago, which didn't quite make sense given their more ambiguously friendly relationship in Aladdin. And then the heroes reacted differently than they normally would just because it was Iago's story. But for all of its flaws, I do still like it. ^^ : D

Oh wow, excellent eye, thank you for pointing that out! : D Now I'll have to look at his room again--right now I only remember the hookah, cushions, and the small-ish fireplace. Indeed, he is older, and certainly not naive, so he would have to have had done a lot of traveling, like you said, in both senses. ^^

I'm very relieved that you don't think any of my stuff is unorthodox. ^^ Ooh wow, thought-provoking? Thank you! ^^

Ooh, that's great that you've recently seen the musical? What did you think of it? : D

J:

The dynamic between Jafar and Iago definitely changed in Return of Jafar for the reasons you mentioned! They seemed like they had a long history of friendship in the original movie, but I suppose Jafar forcing Iago to become his roommate inside the lamp gave Iago some second thoughts about their relationship. XDD Iago was definitely the main character, and had more room been provided in the plot, I bet the writers could have explored his reasons for switching sides even more.

LOL just don't take my word for it-- I may have been imagining or seeing things.

Yes, absolutely! You clearly enjoy researching what you're passionate about and put that knowledge to work in your art. I especially like the series of pictures that tell a story, like your underworld escape series.

Twisted was extremely enjoyable! I've only seen it once so I've definitely missed some of the elements that you've caught. The writers did such an excellent job of weaving comedy, tragedy, and tenderness into the plot, with such incredible contrast between the three. I especially liked the references to the dynamics between Disney and Pixar, as well as their keen self-awareness ("why is everyone in our kingdom white?"). The casting was perfect, especially their Jasmine and Sultan, and what Dylan Saunders lacked in similarity in face and body type, he pulled off a very likeable and sympathetic Jafar with his mannerisms and emotion. The ending was absolutely beautiful. I can see why you enjoy drawing out your own interpretation of the scenes! Plus I loved how Jonathan Freeman lent his voice to the trailer! When I first saw it I thought, "Wow, that person's impersonation of the Disney Jafar is spot-on"... took a while before I realized whose voice that was. XDDD

Yes! LOL having a rather massive crush on Naveen Andrews, combined with Jafar being my favorite Disney villain since childhood, definitely got me interested in the show. Unfortunately my internship puts me on a wonky schedule, so on Thursdays I don't get home until after the episode has ended. So... I've only seen the first couple of episodes, much to my disappointment. I do read spoilers on Tumblr so I'm not totally in the dark about the storyline, but I hope to watch everything else online in order to catch up on what I've been missing! Their Jafar is certainly much darker than the Disney version, and they appear to give him entirely different motives as a character. Again, I haven't seen enough of the show to make a full analysis, but once this week's finals are over I hope to rectify that. C:

Ooh yeah that's true---Jafar did force their living situation on Iago--that's a great point. : D

That's also true, that was a  lot to squeeze in such a short time. But that was good that Iago got his own storyline, however squeezed. ^^

It's an excuse to watch Aladdin again. XD

Ooh wow, I'm really glad you enjoyed Underworld Escape! ^^ A lot of times I don't know who's reading the story picture comic things, so thank you for telling me. ^^

There is a lot to take in one viewing--I've watched it over four times and still am finding new things in it. : D Indeed, that takes a lot of skill to make a tragi-comedy like that, and in a parody nonetheless. The meta was fun, and the self-awareness was also great : D  I agree about the casting, Jasmine was able to be infuriating and also sympathetic. The Sultan was hilarious and sinister in his apathy. : D My favorite supporting performance was the guy who played the old grand vizier--his song reminded me of Zoser from Aida : D.

Oh yes, the ending--- ;__; It was beautiful, wasn't it? ^^ Dylan Saunders was awesome, his Jafar was cynical and yet optimistic, and could be commanding and also heart-wrenchingly vulnerable. : D

LOLOL, yes, Jonathan Freeman in the trailer, that was so awesome. : DD  He has such a distinct voice, but his name isn't plastered prominently like  other actors, so there's a possibility to not realize it's him. : D

He is aesthetically pleasing, I agree. That's awesome that you've been a Jafar fan from the start. : DD ^^ Oh, no, that's unfortunate that you miss the episodes-- D: Hopefully you're able to catch up on the episodes! ^^ Indeed, I've heard about his characterization and his motives, and am interested in checking it out for myself. ^^ Yay, looking forwad to hearing your analysis! And good luck with your exams! ^^

Jaffacake totally works as well! Have you ever seen an awesome dub called "Aladdin and the cave of cheeseburgers"? Jafar is renamed Jaffacake and speaks in this really high voice like he's permanently on helium XDDD

Thank youuu
