Man I love Frollo! Up until recently I never really did..but thats mainly because I hadn't seen The hunchback of Notre Dame since I was a kid. I remember hating him and the movie in general because it didn't have that typical child friendly Disney flair.
Now that I'm all grown up suddenly a new light shines on Frollo. Now I understand what this guys problem was the whole time, his own hypocricy! He was so afraid to admit his own human flaws that he blamed his lust for the gypsy Esmeralda on witchcraft, LOL. In turn, she needed to die so that he would be cleansed of sin, even though he planned on exterminating the gypies in Paris.
Double standards much? Afraid of the sin of lust but not the sin of wrath? pffft. But hey this is why I like Frollo. He can't live up to his own standards as a human being lettalone a holy man.
Disney, I DEMAND that you make more vicious villains like this one.

Anyway I tried to do this one little by little each time I had a chance this week in between assignments and moving houses. Its been a very busy few months for me and this is the first deviation Ive actually done since probably December.
How sad... At least I'm experimenting with style a little?
Also, the requests I received in December will be uploaded very soon. Now that things are settling down I may have time to scratch my head a little

Concerning Frollo in general, I must admit that I always feel kind of sorry for him. Of course it's far easier to just shrug him off as a cruel monster, but I think he's a tormented man actually. Maybe people could have understood him better in the adaption if the makers had included his process of growing up, just to show why he became the fanatic bigot he was in the end; for that was what Victor Hugo did in his novel, tell us about Frollo's biography and offer us a chance to roughly comprehend the human being behind the sinister facade. However, I still admire Disney for the Frollo they gave us, with all his human nature, his inner strife and yet the immense darkness that permanently surrounds him. He is, without a doubt, the most interesting antagonist they have created so far.

And yes I agree with you. Admittedly I'm always more drawn to tortured characters rather than the typical "good guy" or "bad guy". Although Frollo was pretty bad, its true that no one is really born like that. It would have been interesting to see his background in the Disney adaptation, but I suppose Disney never really went too deep into explaining most of their villains. There was usually a hint here or there as to why their bad guys were bad guys.. e.g. Scar being jealous of Mufasa, Hades also being jealous of Zeus, but I see these reasons as shallow and superficial rather than a 'real' reason for a person to be bad. Frollo was one of the more realistic Disney villains and I think his adaptation had to be toned down a little for the children? Lol

And well, I suppose you're right, Disney already did well in their depiction of the poor fellow that is Frollo. For what the book gave us, they exceeded what should be expected of such a company, didn't they? Maybe this is the best they could achieve at the time. ~

I liked the fire in that scene.... I never liked Frollo though, the creeper. So Without say, I like how you got Esmeralda in the fire and don't really like Frollo.

Easily one of Disney's best moments. Both with the level of artistry and the intensity of the themes in the scene.
Too bad they went they way they did afterwards. Now Disney's just a sugary, twee-pandering mess.

I absolutely agree. This movie was something special just because of this scene. I wish theyd step out of their G rated bullshit and get a little more adventurous with their movies like they did in the 90s.

An interesting thing about the movie that you neglected to mention, is that he gives in to the power of the sin of lust; "Destroy Esmeralda and let her taste the fires of hell, or else let her be mine and mine alone!" "Now Gypsy it's your turn. Choose me or your pyre! Be mine or you will you burn!" -- During the "Hellfire" scene.
And when he is about to burn her at the pyre he offers to save her only if she gives herself to him.

Im so sorry I never replied to this comment, I dont know how I missed it! Youre right about everything, very very true words. Such a complex yet narrow mind he has. Sort of animal for someone whos supposed to be so religious. It shows a real hypocritical side to devout and self rightous christians, who think of themselves as pure but feel the right to judge everyone else.
