Man I love Frollo! Up until recently I never really did..but thats mainly because I hadn't seen The hunchback of Notre Dame since I was a kid. I remember hating him and the movie in general because it didn't have that typical child friendly Disney flair.
Now that I'm all grown up suddenly a new light shines on Frollo. Now I understand what this guys problem was the whole time, his own hypocricy! He was so afraid to admit his own human flaws that he blamed his lust for the gypsy Esmeralda on witchcraft, LOL. In turn, she needed to die so that he would be cleansed of sin, even though he planned on exterminating the gypies in Paris.
Double standards much? Afraid of the sin of lust but not the sin of wrath? pffft. But hey this is why I like Frollo. He can't live up to his own standards as a human being lettalone a holy man.
Disney, I DEMAND that you make more vicious villains like this one.

Anyway I tried to do this one little by little each time I had a chance this week in between assignments and moving houses. Its been a very busy few months for me and this is the first deviation Ive actually done since probably December.
How sad... At least I'm experimenting with style a little?
Also, the requests I received in December will be uploaded very soon. Now that things are settling down I may have time to scratch my head a little

Wow, well done and i remember this scene in the movie, it struck me as very powerful. Add to that the voice talents of Tony Jay and it was epic. It's a pity Tony isn't with us anymore, but his voice will continue to inspire us, like this picture does.

Nice!! His facial expression is fantastic! Esmeralda was a little hard to catch. I knew he was looking at something in the fire!
As for critique-age, I can't really say anything....but one nit pick thing is Frollo's right arm. It looks really smooth, I can't tell if there's a sleeve on it or not, but his left arm does have a sleeve...And the edges of the fireplace do make the fire and Esmeralda stand out more, but I wonder if it would be better to have just the fire behind Frollo, because the black also cages in the effect.

LOOVE. I fortunately loved Hunchback as a kid. I never did care much for Quasi but I loved Esmerelda and Frollo. It is an excellent piece of art.

I tried to convince this kid once that Frollo had a thing for Esmeralda, but she wouldn't believe me! I told her that that was the point of his entire song! But she said that he only hated Esmeralda. lol.

you did an amazing job on the Esmeralda fire, it really does look fluid and firelike. Frollo also looks great, but I'd probably up the contrast from the light a bit more. His hands look okay, but with that much lighting on his face it looks more like there is a second light source as opposed to that fire being really bright. Darken the shadows on his face, make the left of his face not so bright and add a bit more of a highlight on the right side of the face. The new coloring style looks pretty great, even within a few months your work has improved by leaps and bounds.

Hey there! thanks a ton for the critique as usual. I see my results are getting better and Im glad you like the new style. Ive been sort of hiding and trying to develop a different approach all at the same time. I need to learn a little more about shading and perspective because this is where I fail most but Ill try not to dissapoint in my next piece

I agree. There's something about Hunchback that only an adult can truly appreciate. When I rewatched it, I was like, "OMG. This movie is so powerful!" I think it could've been even better without some of the silly antics by the animals and gargoyles, but epic movie nonetheless.

Yes I totally agree. I think the gargoyles were very out of place. It seemed like a very dark movie that just didn't flow because of the little off attempts at childish humor. Still a very good movie with a very good villain but definitely not for children. I would have loved to see it even darker just like in the original novel.

He looks so intense! I use to hate Frollo too and even now he's one of my least favorite Disney Villains, but as I got older I did see how The Hunchback of Notredame was far more darker than any other Disney movie.

Yeah hes not a particular fan favorite it seems, but his song is amazing and I think its rated pretty high on the best Disney song charts. I appreciate the depth of this story but then again Ive always been attracted to the complicated characters of any story
